"Omit needless words," intone Strunk and White in The Elements of Style; "use definite, specific, concrete language." In order to use the best word for the job, though, you have to know it. The Flip Dictionary is full of words you may have forgotten and words you never knew, all accessed by their meaning. Look up "mounds and hills, with," and you will find tumulus. Search "the ropes connecting the harness and the canopy of a parachute," and you'll find shrouds. There's no need to say "lowest point in orbit" when you can say perigee, or "lowest deck of a ship" when you can say orlop. We don't know when we'd ever find a chance to use the word tomally, but we like knowing the one word out there that means "lobster liver." And, oh, the lists! Of apples and art movements, beers and birding terms, constellations and clothes (including 47 kinds of shirt), fears and ferns. The same caveats apply as with the use of a thesaurus: some of the definitions are a bit off ("hater" is vague for misanthrope), others are rather informal (boner, for instance, to mean "error"), and still others are so specific that you will want to be sure that you truly have found the right word for the job. 30% of this book is extremely useful--the rest, useless

As a fiction writer, I use this book often for two extremely helpful aspects:
1) The lists of different names for colors, kinds of fabrics, etc.
2) The thesauras-type entries contain some words that only particially mean the same thing. This in-exactness means that you find words that are closely related to the word you originally looked up; you receive a more comprehensive list of suggestions. (This feature is great for people who already know the exact definitions of words. Otherwise, I suggest a companion dictionary.)
The "flip dictionary" aspects of the book are useless. First, if you don't think the same way the author does, you might not be able to find the reverse entry at all. There are many different ways to word a definition. Second, what good are words that most likely your readers won't know? Take these entries for instance: "pivoting, capable of: trochoid;" and "larval form of certain bivalve mollusks: spat." Trochoid? Spat? In a short story about underwater exploration, if I must mention those things in that way, I'll stick to "able to pivot" and "clam larva." My readers will undoubtedly thank me for it.
I'd have to own a Roget's Super Thesaurus to be sure, but I highly suspect that it's a much better resource for writers.

Do we really need this?

This Flip Dictionary isn't something really new. And in some of the areas it covers, there are serious errors.
It's probably unfair to ask one author, working by herself, to give us a book on the quality of, say, Roget's International Thesaurus a volume of over 1300 pages published by Thomas Y. Crowell and prepared by a large professional team building up on 150 years of scholarship and research.
However, life isn't always "fair." When I write, I want to know that the information is comprehensive and reliable. I think Kipfer's book is a brave attempt and the design is contemporary and engaging. For my writing, I think I'll stick with time-proven Roget

About the Author
Richard Pilbrow first made his mark at Olivier's National Theatre, lighting shows such as the first Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead. He revolutionised stage lighting in Britain, designing the system for the new National and setting up Theatre Projects, the first independent lighting and sound design and theatre design consultancy company in the UK, now active internationally. He has been a consultant for theatres and concert halls in over 80 countries.

Information and inspiration

This book helped me make the decision to go for lighing design as a career .... the first half has the info most of us in the industry have picked up on stage but orders it very well, the second has many wonderful anechdotes from his and many others careers. Its the only lighing book I have found that one can enjoy reading again and again.

If you are in lighting you must read this book.

This is the only book on Stage Lighting that I've come across that covers the whole spectrum of the possiblities of lighting. Mr. Pilbrow covers the range of knowledge you must have to be an effective designer -- everything from how to setup your paperwork and reports to the most esoteric of design concepts. My personal favorite couple of lines talks briefly on how you have to think about where to position the light board during rehearsals to either be in the middle of or to get away from the political center of power. There is no other author out there that can speak clearly about the evolution of lighting from oil lamp to Vari-Lite. Basically, living the life of a true designer is all about collecting visuals and techniques that intrigue and excite us and using and reinterpreting those ideas through our own personalities. With Mr. Pilbrow's book, you will never find a more comprehensive single source of those lighting ideas and techniques. Don't read the book because you have to. Read the book because it will make you a better designer.

The best book on theatre lighting anywhere

I bought this last year, and it quickly became one of my favourite books of all time. It's well written, and is packed full of information. But that's only the beginning. Pilbrow has chucked in years of experience and anecdote, not only from his own extensive career, but also from many other excellent designers. Whenever I'm lighting a show, I take this book with me. In a way, it is my own lighting assistant. This is a must, not only for lighting people, but also directors and producers. And that is because this book endevours to emphasise the 'art' of lighting, and not just the craft.
And it's about time.

Great program but don't spend a lot on it!

I am a homeschool mom and this vocabulary program was recommended by a seasoned English teacher at a homeschool conference. I tried it out on my third grade daughter and at the end of the year was testing at a 7th grade level in vocabulary!
Each lesson consists of roughly 10 activities using a set list of vocabulary words so we go through it in 2 school weeks.
It takes about 15 minutes a day and I just hand her the book and she does the lessons herself. If you buy the student workbook, I highly recommend the teacher's manual... not so much for the answers but because each manual has a key you can use to get access to online games and activities centered around each set of vocabulary words and my daughter loves playing them.
The only problem is you can only get these books through Sadlier Oxford if you have a teaching certificate, homeschool moms be darned. I purchased this year's books on Amazon with no problem, right around the price I would have paid through the Sadlier website so I about fell over when I came to do the same thing this year. These teacher's editions are $200 and up on Amazon marketplace and only about $26.00 on the Sadlier website. If you know someone with a teacher's credential, I highly suggest you ask them to order from Sadlier for you, but please, PLEASE don't purchase these books at this ridiculous price! Doing so only supports people like us being gouged from shady sellers.

Get out there! As a Carolina country boy, I love getting out and getting dirty. it's how I exercise, really...but this book gives me lots of ideas to get my friends out. they're all desk boys...god bless them but they are out of shape...not that i have nothing to improve upon...i've lost weight but I remember the way I looked when I joined the Army... I want to be that fit again.

What A great book! It was so much more than I expected for the price! Nice photos of the exercises and a daily exercise plan for those who need the structure! I was also pleased that the author suggests the use of a LCHF Ketogenic way of eating and describes that eating plan in this book. This exercise plan could be used at work and even on the road! Excellent!

Mirsad's book is an excellent resource for health
enthusiasts everywhere. The program emphasizes
a total approach which includes knowing your
baseline measurements, eating a healthful diet
and exercising regularly.

The physical baseline numbers include weight,
waistline and BMI. The optimal diet includes
green veggies, fruits, high protein, seeds, nuts
and water. Protein sources include fish,eggs
and meats like turkey. Dairy should consist of modest
portions of yogurt, kefir or cottage cheese.

Mirsad recommends a robust home program of
exercise including things like yoga, cycling or
warrior stretch exercises. Overall, the program
is an ambitious one but very doable for the
person who is serious about lifetime health
and wellness issues.

This book is valuable for anyone thinking of working in a prison. It offers two significant benefits.

ONE: it articulates, in great detail, the risk of becoming a victim of manipulation by prisoners. It shows how to avoid this danger.

TWO: Reading the book is an exercise in sorting out correctional staff's practice wisdom from their punitive fear mongering.

ONE: when members of the public think of the risks of working in prison, they imagine physical violence. In my experience, more correctional employees are manipulated into breaking rules and violating laws than suffer physical attacks. As best I can tell, more employees are "walked off," than are beaten or stabbed. The risks of physical injury or death are real, but can be mitigated by simple precautions. Preventing manipulation requires much more subtle work. This book does a solid job of showing how crooks do it, and how employees can immunize themselves to this risk.

Victimizers target potential victims by observing appearance and body language. They look for staffers whose dress and grooming betray discomfort in their own skin. They look for employees who are unhappy, frustrated, resentful, fearful. To check out these initial impressions, they test for willingness to let minor rules violations slide and to permit petty breaches of personal boundaries; using first names, brushing against the employee, floating sexual innuendos.

If the employee does not put a stop to these probes, the grooming begins in earnest. The staffer's unmet emotional needs are addressed. The employee with low self esteem is flattered. The victimizer lets him know how fascinating and wise the staffer is. The resentful employee is assured that management does not appreciate him the way the prisoner does. The staffer's sympathies are aroused by hard luck stories. The frightened staffer is assured the victimizer will make sure nothing happens to him.

Then the employee is inveigled into moving from toleration of minor violations to committing violations himself. The employee who shared his sandwiches is induced to bring in extra goodies. He is asked to mail letters that would not get past the prison censors. He asked to make unauthorized contact with the prisoner's family.

At some point the employee becomes afraid to let management know he has broken so many rules. He is isolated from other staff. Now the trap is sprung.

The employee is blackmailed into bringing drugs into the prison or into performing sexual favors. One officer was so deeply compromised that he brought in a uniform, piece by piece, until the prisoner had a full uniform and was able to escape.

The authors provide specific directions on how to keep from becoming a victim. The employee must set clear, firm, consistent limits. The employee must refuse to be isolated from the rest of staff.

Most critically, if the employee has been sucked into this vortex, he must let administration know. To my knowledge, absent a major felony or security breach, the worst that happens to an employee who turns himself in is loss of some pay and a temporary demotion. Most often, the employee receives a reprimand or caution. Hiring and training a new employee is time consuming and expensive. Management generally prefers a sadder and wiser employee to an untested new one.

The employee who fails to tell on himself winds up getting fired. He loses his job pension. If the violation is flagrant, he may be prosecuted. He is humiliated. It is an insidious process; I knew several employees whose overfamiliarity led to their dismissal. None had believed it could happen to them. None saw it coming, no matter how hard I, and other colleagues, tried to tell them.

The authors' greatest strength is their empathy with the victims of manipulation. They grasp fully what it is like to start out wanting to do the right thing, but end up committing crimes one would never have imagined preforming unprompted.

TWO The book does an excellent job of showing how correctional staff can be manipulated into breaking rules and into violating laws. Unfortunately, the book also fosters a punitive agenda. By inducing global, ultimately paralyzing, fear, the authors manipulate readers into betraying their own highest values.

In this book, fear is promoted by omission. The authors say that staff are vulnerable to manipulation if they are too "soft," or too "hard," but all examples are of staff who are too permissive or lenient. There are no examples of staff whose harshness and rigidity masks an underlying sense of personal inadequacy, which a con artist can exploit.

The authors state that not all prisoners try to manipulate staff; many are trying to turn their lives around. They then provide only one example of a prisoner making an appropriate request of staff. That example is weak and ambiguous. It is not helpful.

The authors clearly know their subject. None of their vignettes looks fabricated. All examples present scenarios a correctional employee can expect to face. I believe that had they wanted, they could have provided many examples of prisoners who relate appropriately to staff. The authors could have explained that these prisoners do not ask staff to break rules or laws. They do not make spurious offers to make the employee's life easier or ask the employee to run errands. Their interactions with staff are clearly part of the prisoner's effort to "turn his life around."

Providing such examples would have helped readers distinguish between prisoners who are "programming," from those who are manipulators. The authors could have offered guidance on how to respond effectively to prisoners who are trying to make positive changes in their lives. It is true that a prisoner who presents this way may be an extremely clever manipulator; I believe the authors had the knowledge and experience to help readers tell which prisoners are sincere and which ones not when they ask for help changing for the better.

Had they given as many examples of prisoners making positive changes as they did of prisoners manipulating staff, they then would have written a book that was balanced and genuinely helpful to staffers. Instead, they wrote a one-sided book, which instead of helping staffers deal confidently with prisoners, provokes fear; fear so pervasive that it corrodes the will.

Here is one clear example. During orientation this book was used to justify telling new employees that we should have no empathy for prisoners. I had not yet read the book, When I did read it, I discovered that the presenter had misunderstood what it does say about empathy, but he had grasped its general tenor.

I found the directive not to have empathy appalling, and shared this sentiment with several colleagues. To my surprise, they all agreed that it would be dangerous to have empathy with members of this population.

In response, I askedI of what disorders is the absence of empathy a defining characteristic. My colleagues knew: antisocial personality disorder, sociopathy, psychopathy. They knew this full well. I was not telling them anything they did not know. The fear instilled in them by the Department of Corrections had driven them to abandon one of their core values.

The Department had also made them less safe. If empathy is understanding what it feels like to be another person, would it not be safer to know what it feels like to be a prisoner than to insist on remaining ignorant of that perspective?

If the authors had valued empathy for prisoners as much as the do for staff, they would have written a masterpiece. As it is, their book is an incomplete, middling effort.

It includes all the "tricks" that inmates and criminals use to "get one over on you" Since these people have nothing to do all day but dream up new crimes and manipulation techniques, the knowledge this book will impart will allow one to "see them coming a mile away". Reading this book will enhance ones safety both in the corrections environment and on the street.

At a time in their lives when women must balance the pulls of instinct, hormonally charged emotion and familial and social expectations, it is both possible and highly beneficial to practice Buddhism. While Buddhism has a long history of monastic practice and application, its modern expansion into the West has emphasized its relevance to householders. In a highly selective culling of teachings, Napthali wisely focuses on maternal mind states and how Buddhism can give a mother insight and literal breathing space before she responds to any parenting situation. This book changed my life

Buddhism for Mothers opened my eyes to a completely different way of looking at parenting, and at everything. One small example- before reading this book I would get mad or even just annoyed at my kids all the time. I couldn't figure out how to change their behavior. This book helped me see that I should start by dealing with my anger, separately from whatever my kids are doing. Basically she's saying that if you start to feel angry, don't suppress it or express it. Just notice it, and the effect it's having on your body. Remember that the feeling is only temporary, so you don't want to give it too much power. Use it as an opportunity to grow by exploring what's causing it and then resolving it. Well, that explanation doesn't really do the book justice. But you might be able to get a taste from it, that this is an approach that starts by helping you to become more loving, and then the rest sort of takes care of itself. But she's very specific about how to be loving, and patient, and accepting. There's a lot more to it than you might think. My kids still start to drive me crazy, but now I have a way of turning that into a moment where I can practice what I've learned. Just that switch from feeling emotional, to analytical changes the whole dynamic.

You will read it again and again!

I purchased this book along with "Mama Zen" by Miller and have LOVED them both. I keep them by my bed and read something out of each of them every night. It's the kind of book you can read over and over because the topics covered are relevant to your life everyday with children! This book goes more into the buddhist teachings (which I like) than "mama zen" does and I find they complement each other well. This is better than any "how to" or "what to expect" parenting book out there because it tackles the most difficult aspect of parenting (I think) - how it makes you feel! Tired, angry, hopeless, lost, happy, confused, whatever! The author lets you know it is okay and normal to feel all of these things as a parent and gives you buddhist teaching to help you deal with these emotions and faith that you will become a better person for the challenges that parenting provides! Best "parenting" book i've ever bought!! Next I'm buying her book for parenting school-age children!

love the world as you love your child

These books changed my life and really frames the task of being a new mom in a quite radical way: your love for yourself and the world must be the same as your love for child. Every Buddhist lesson can be learned and should be learned through the tasks of parenting. Keep it by my bedside. Best addition to my life to help with being a mom. Get it for all moms!
