I'm doing so well on Phase 1. Why can't I stay on it indefinitely?

There are two types of people on the South Beach Diet: those who cannot wait to start Phase 2 and those who never want to see Phase 1 end.

Why are some people so enamored with Phase 1? The reason is that it's simple and to the point. You don't have to do a lot of thinking about food choices. You're basically eating lean protein, high-fiber legumes, low-fat dairy, good fats (including some nuts), and plenty of vegetables. Those highly processed refined carbs that were your downfall are out of sight and, within a few days, out of mind (at least for most people). You're encouraged to eat until you're full and snack before you get hungry. And every time you step on the scale, you get a big grin on your face because those unwanted pounds and fat are just melting away. So it's not surprising to me that Phase 1 fans often ask, "If I'm doing so well on Phase 1, why do I have to move on to Phase 2?" Phase 1 is not meant to be a long-term eating plan. Its dual goals are to jump-start weight loss for people who have 10 or more pounds to lose (thus providing immediate positive reinforcement) and to control swings in blood sugar and eliminate cravings for sugar and refined starches. Phase 1 can also have a positive effect on sugar in people with pre-diabetes. In just 2 weeks, you should have achieved these two goals and be ready to move on.

Once your sugar and cravings are under control, there's a key reason to go on to Phase 2: we don't want you to miss out on the myriad vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients that come from reintroducing whole fruits and whole grains to your diet, not to mention the added fiber. These foods contain thousands of phytochemicals that protect your body against a host of diseases, including heart disease and cancer. If you were to continue indefinitely on Phase 1 and deny yourself these foods, you would not be learning how to make good food choices in the real world. More importantly, you'd be missing out on some of the best medicine nature has to offer.

In addition, if you were to continue with the smaller palette of foods recommended on Phase 1, your diet would get dull over the long haul. And once you're bored, you're much more likely to revert to your old eating habits. For the diet to truly become a lifestyle--one that allows you to sustain weight loss and garner all the related health benefits--there has to be variety and satisfaction in your eating plan. That's another reason why we move you on to Phase 2 so quickly.

Remember, it may take you longer to lose weight by following the three phases of our diet. But the chances of keeping that weight off are far better.

Can I still eat as much protein now that I'm eating more carbohydrates on Phase 2?

As you know, on the South Beach Diet, we don't expect you to count grams of protein or weigh your food on any phase. Now that you're gradually adding satisfying high-fiber whole grains and fruits to your diet on Phase 2, you'll naturally be less hungry, and the amount of lean protein you require to feel full will no doubt be less than you were eating on Phase 1. That said, I encourage you to eat some protein--fish or shellfish, lean beef or pork, white meat chicken or turkey, or soy protein, for example--along with these good carbs at most meals.

Protein helps slow down the digestion of carbohydrates, which means that your body will make less insulin, your sugar swings will be reduced, and you won't crave more food in between meals. I also urge you to eat slowly, savor your food, and really enjoy the variety of foods you'll introduce on Phase 2. If you do this, your focus will no longer be on how much protein you can have because you'll never be hungry. Another tip: Once you're satisfied, push your chair away from the table. It's fine to leave some food on your plate at the end of a meal.

Can I really eat anything I want on Phase 3?

If you're talking about dessert as an occasional treat, of course. On Phase 3, we don't regulate what you can eat. Yes, you can finally have that small bowl of ice cream or a small piece of chocolate cake or the white bagel that you couldn't have before. But you shouldn't do it too often, and you should continue to watch amounts on desserts. Phase 3 isn't about abandoning the good principles of the diet and suddenly resuming your old eating habits. It's about continuing to make smart, healthy food choices--for life. If you follow the principles of the diet most of the time, we expect you to enjoy anything you want now and then.

Effective, yes.

Probably the most effective diet I ever tried. We get the old revision in a Garage Sale, but decided to have the new revision base in new data and research for food nutritional facts. Even better than before. In the first two weeks, following the diet, I loose 10 pounds, no kidding. Effective, yes.

Nothing makes you lose weight faster than cutting carbs in my experience, but Atkins is too restrictive. This diet lets you add in a little bit more and gives you some easy exercises to do to strengthen and build muscle for more calorie burn. I haven't been using it for too long but so far it seems doable.

My wife and I have only been trying this (slowly implementing this into our life style changes) now for approximately 5 days and I have already shed 13#'s and it isn't as hard as expected! Feel better than I have in years and do NOT have to give up anything that I like to eat. The first 2 weeks are restrictive but not as bad as one thinks! Even fun to create new recipes using allowed, healthier ingredients! Can't wait to hit my goal and become ME again!!! Already not feeling like needing to nap mid day after only 5 days! Love it!!

He is the host of “The Amazing Adventures of A Nobody” which was licensed to National Geographic International and aired in over 100 countries, including in the United States on Fox Reality Channel and Canada’s OLN. He is also the author of a book by the same title. He has appeared on Good Morning America, CNN, FOX, BBC among other mainstream media outlets. He runs a production company called Principal Media and lives in Los Angeles, CA with his dog Winston.

Normally I can find something good in any book, I mean "something"..... Not so with this book! Save your time.

First book I ever wanted to return for a refund! The buyer of this book should know that the author takes a camera crew with him to film from a distance how he gets people to pay for his gas, lodging etc, as he travels around the world on a yellow motorcycle. The camera crew is a dead give away that he did this book strictly for economic gain, he was not on some existential journey. One of my points is that if people were not being filmed they would have simply thought he was just another homeless guy looking for a free ride causing his trip to take forever. Which if possible would have made the book even more boring. People are much more giving when they think someone is watching them or somehow they feel like they got "credit" for the help. Skipping the camera crew problem, the writing is bland, the story is bland. I would rather watch paint dry than read this book!

What the world needs- a chance to give stuff to a rich American

Another self-aggrandizing book by someone “doing good” in his travels. Except in this case the “good” the author is doing is allowing others the opportunity to give HIM food, lodging, and gas. He gets a free trip around the world and they- the lucky souls- get the opportunity to show him "kindness," or rather, stuff that costs money.

Golly, are there not enough deserving people who really need help that we could be kind to? Do we need rich Americans roaming the world allowing struggling Indians to feed them, house them, and even (!) buy gasoline for them?

Occasionally, he’d decide that one of the people who helped him deserved to be helped in return and (cue the camera crew) he’d spring out a grand gesture- rent an apartment for a homeless man, buy a rickshaw for a rickshaw driver, buy a cow for a farmer.

If you feel inspired by his actions (and judging from the reviews, many people do), you can help similar people in need by setting up Kiva account and making a $25 loan to a farmer, motorcycle taxi driver, or small manufacturer to allow them to increase their earnings. When they pay the money back, you can re-lend it to someone else. You can help more people than he did, though you will not be the star of a TV show, see the recipients sob with gratitude, or be praised for being wonderful.

I was not too bothered by his soliciting corporate donations for transportation across oceans or his begging in wealthy countries, but when he started freeloading off impoverished people in the third world, I found it really offensive. If people struggling to feed their children did not step up immediately to feed and house this wealthy foreigner, he’d get whiny about the lack of kindness he was experiencing.

It is significant to me that he did not take the trip, then write the book when he realized what a great story it was. Rather, he set out with a film crew and the intention to write a book. There is something a lot less pure about that, a lot more staged… a lot more fake. He says that the camera crew remained hidden until he’d been offered donations, so their presence did not influence people’s willingness to help him. Somehow I suspect that they were always called in to glorify his donations. Their presence was never mentioned in the body of the book.

I was also irritated by the tone adopted when he talked about his girlfriend, whom he seemed to view as clingy and lacking in independence because she wants a commitment in their relationship, while he needs to run free. Unless he was discouraged in his trip, when he called and leaned on her for support. Sigh.

By all means, be kind! Do boring errands for a senior citizen! Provide respite care for someone caring for a disabled child or a spouse with Alzheimer’s! Read to kids, contribute to groups that help refugees, help at the food bank.

Just please don’t have others pay for your trip around the world and brag to me about how great you are for letting them do it!

Extraordinary and transformational book

Leon has a gift to write, he is able to touch the soul of the reader. He is able to make you laugh, cry, and be deeply inspired. I recommend that everyone snuggle up with your children, spouse, or loved one and bring them a gift of hope, truth and a touch of God.

RESCUERS has been made into a three-part mini-series which airs on Showtime in October 1997, May 1998 and Fall 1998. Produced by Barbra Streisand and Cis Corman, the October film features actresses Elizabeth Perkins and Sela Ward as single women who acted alone to save Jewish lives.

True stories of moral courage and goodness

On the front cover of "Rescuers" are 12 photographs of some very nice looking people. They are pictures of people that you might meet every day; of friends and family, or someone that you might pass by on the street. They are the faces of very ordinary people, but they are also much more than that. They are the faces of people that risked their lives to save the lives of others during the Holocaust. They are the faces of the rescuers. There are many more photographs inside the book, of rescuers from countries all over Europe. Author Malka Drucker and photographer Gay Block interviewed and photographed the rescuers, seeking the heart of compassion and moral courage. They found that heart in men and women; the young and the old; and in people from all walks of life. Every story told by the rescuers is very moving. Some rescuers saved one person from death; some saved many thousands. All of the rescuers are worthy of the greatest respect and honor. The rescuers were sometimes asked the question of why they helped others to live, when so many other people stood by and did nothing. The rescuers would answer that question by saying that they were only doing what they knew was right. By caring for other people, they were acting the way that everyone should have been acting. One of the most inspiring truths found in the book, is the thought that we all have that same spark of goodness within our hearts, that was shown so nobly by the rescuers. We all have the capacity for doing what is right, even in times of the greatest fear and terror. This is a book that will warm your heart, and it is well worth reading.

Slanted intro

There's a lot of good information here, but I felt that the introduction to the Polish section was very slanted. Deborah Lipstadt, the Holocaust scholar, has a blog entitled "The Myth that won't die: the Poles were worse than the Nazis," and this intro perpetuates that myth. Most scholars agree that the Poles collaborated less with the Nazis and resisted them more than just about any other occupied country (Yugoslavia had a huge resistance too). Pre-war anti-Semitism and post-war anti-Semitism are irrelevant to this fact, and are complex issues (certainly anti-Semitism was encouraged by a Soviet government hated by most Poles).

Bottom line: the Poles hated the Germans. So in Poland there was no central government collaborating with them. This makes a difference. The Hungarian collaborating govt turned over 600,000 Jews for extermination, with all of 13 SS men to oversee. The Vichy govt rounded up 14,000 Jews in one day, throwing in 2,500 children whom the Nazis didn't ask for, without a German uniform in sight. No Polish SS battalions: there were volunteer SS battalions from all over Europe. No Polish concentration camp guards; no Hiwis (helpers of the mobile killing troops). Picture a collaborator with a uniform and a gun killing a Jew. That could've been one of many nationality, but almost certainly not Polish. (Some Blue Police and local police collaboration excepted, but minimal in the scope of the Holocaust.) Why did the Germans bring in tens of thousands of Ukrainians and Balts to run the machinery of the Holocaust if the Poles were so bad?

Did Poles collaborate? Yes. There were plenty of scumbags who helped Nazis find the Jews hiding out, after the ghettoes had already been emptied. There are scumbags in every society. This caused genuine damage, but really, in the scope of the continent-wide betrayal of the Jews and collaboration with the Nazis, it's certainly doesn't give a reason to single out the Poles. The intro seems to rationalize Jewish "rage" against the Poles. Personally, I don't believe different ethnicities have specific moral qualities. I think it's an individual thing.

Rescuers: Portraits of Moral Courage in the Holocaust

The thing I LOVE about this book (since it was first issued I have given at least 50 copies to young people as a gift) are the pictures of the rescuers then and now. The point of each true story is that ordinary people were suddenly thrust into extraordinary and fearsome times and they went out of their way to do the moral and very courageous thing to help rescue Jews. Sometimes the people were friends before hand and sometimes they were not. At least one time, the "saved" people were seemingly ungrateful out of their own fear and frustration. This act was personally dangerous and also dangerous for the families of the rescuers. Each rescuer made it clear that they had not thought twice about it at the time and that they had never expected to play such a role before it happened. These people were HEROES. Every story is deeply affecting. Sometimes there was reward at the end and sometimes not. Sometimes years of struggle followed.

James William Fulbright (1905-1995), Arkansas senator from 1945 to 1975, emerges as a deeply contradictory figure in this engrossing, fairminded biography: an internationalist and opponent of McCarthyism and American involvement in the Vietnam War, he was also a staunch segregationist. The son of a hardheaded, Progressive-era businessman and a mother who, as a crusading journalist and reformer, took on the Arkansas political establishment, Fulbright developed a faith in rationality, progress and social engineering. He championed the United Nations, created the international academic exchange program that bears his name, advocated a land-for-peace deal as a solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and did battle with "true believers" as he called McCarthyite anti-communists and white supremacists. Powerful chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee (1959-1974), he eventually became a chief critic of the liberal internationalist cause he had espoused from the 1940s through LBJ's reign, arguing that it had allied itself with American imperialism and a wasteful military-industrial complex. Woods, a University of Arkansas history professor, interviewed Fulbright extensively, as well as Robert McNamara, George McGovern and others, for this revealing unauthorized biography. Photos.

An excellent biography.

I rarely read biographies, but purchased this one because I know the author, and after drinking a few glasses of wine at a book-signing reception for him, felt compelled to do so. I was fully prepared to be bored by a dry historical biography, but was surprised to find an engaging book instead.

A classic text still relevant today.

I recall having this book assigned when I was an architectural student in the 1980s. I found it invaluable then. I still use it for reference today, some thirty years later. The book was among the first to compile in one comprehensive summary that buildings can be designed to take advantage of natural climate. It has detailed explanation of over 100 climate design practices that can be applied to homes and small scale buildings. The bibliography lists references for building science and climatology dating back to the early 1900s, and thus is invaluable for research. Architects, builders, and anyone interested in energy efficient building design will find this a still useful reference.

I believe there is no better way to design and construct homes than to consider ...

This is an older book, circa 1980's. However, its principles remain fundamentally correct. I believe there is no better way to design and construct homes than to consider local climate and site conditions as two of the primary drivers. The book is an excellent guideline for that purpose. The book's text assumes the reader has a high knowledge level of several engineering concepts, especially psychrometrics. The design illustrations are clear. I did note several editing errors. That said, I consider the book well worth its purchase price. It forms a useful combination with Lechner's more current Heating, Cooling, Lighting, 4th edition.

Very interesting as it not only deals with both cooling and heating, but also passive assistance for active mechanical systems. The way the book is organized is also very easy to use. Don't let the price fool you. This book is worth every cent and has very rich content. Great graphics, too.

Raymond L. Bisplinghoff (1917–85) was a Professor in the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His other Dover books include Aeroelasticity, co-authored with Holt Ashley and Robert L. Halfman, and Principles of Aeroelasticity, co-authored with Holt Ashley.
