Gr 5-8–Salva and Nya have difficult paths to walk in life. Salva's journey, based on a true story, begins in 1985 with an explosion. The boy's small village in Sudan erupts into chaos while the 11-year-old is in school, and the teacher tells the children to run away. Salva leaves his family and all that is familiar and begins to walk. Sometimes he walks alone and sometimes there are others. They are walking toward a refugee camp in Ethiopia, toward perceived safety. However, the camp provides only temporary shelter from the violent political storm. In 1991-'92, thousands are killed as they try to cross a crocodile-infested river when they are forced out of the country; Salva survives and gets 1200 boys to safety in Kenya. Nya's life in 2008 revolves around water. She spends eight hours a day walking to and from a pond. In the dry season, her family must uproot themselves and relocate to the dry lake bed where they dig in the mud until water eventually trickles out. Nya's narrative frames Salva's journey from Sudan to Ethiopia to Rochester, NY, and, eventually, back to Sudan. Both story lines are spare, offering only pertinent details. In the case of Salva, six years in a camp pass by with the barest of mentions. This minimalism streamlines the plot, providing a clarity that could have easily become mired in depressing particulars. Must Be An Excellent Book

This was for my 7th grade son was assigned to read in school. This was the first book my son had ever finished, talked about and even read note than he was assigned to do. My son is dyslexic which makes reading a book laborious or even impossible. I bought the feature that reads it to him which he loved and made it more interesting since they had music and the reader used different voices for each character. It also highlighted the words as it read and for words that are hard it give the definition. Amazing it opens up a whole new world for struggling readers.

wish it was longer and more detailed but overall a good book for all

I thought this was a good book, especially for children because it is a quick read. It is classified as a children's book which is what makes it appropriate as far as the length of the book, vocabulary and age group. But overall it lacked some details and could have been longer( they never explained more in depth the reunion between him and his immediate family in Sudan and lacked details about his New York family). It went too much in depth about other things that should not have mattered like the endless descriptions of Nya's walks( hence the title, i know ) but the story is really about him and his incredibly sad struggles, and secondarily, how the lack of water affected people in different areas of Sudan and surrounding areas. The vocabulary is simple enough for children, too simple for adults imo. The constant back and forth references to Nya were eventually necessary in order to make the connection at the end but the way the stories were written was a bit annoying, What I enjoyed most was that it is a true story about perseverance, determination and hope with some miracles thrown in there:) Stories like this teach our youth and people in general that there are more important things than worrying about their electronic devices, name brand clothes and new cars. We take for granted everything that makes our lives so easy but there are millions of people all over the world that struggle to find a sip of water or even a stale piece of bread to eat.

Two parts of the story of one of the Lost Boys of Sudan

Linda Sue Park’s “A Long Walk to Water,” completely captivated me. It’s based on a true story of Salva, one of the Lost Boys of Sudan, who fled Southern Sudan and walked to Ethiopia. The story is told in two parts. The first part takes place in 1985, when the Southern Sudanese rebels were fighting the government in the North. Salva and other young boys were in school when war reached them. They fled their home villages to reach refugee camps in Ethiopia. They left their families behind and most never saw their family again. Later, when the refugees were driven from Ethiopia, Salva led a group of boys and walked to the camp in Kenya.
The second part of the story takes place in 2008. Nya is a young girl whose job in life is to walk to fetch water all day, every day. Girls like Nya don't go to school. Her chore day in and day out is to walk to the pond to fill her container and bring it home. After her morning trip to the pond, Nya eats, and then turns around and walks back to the pond to fill her container again. When the pond dries up, the village moves to the Lake where the water has to be reached by digging.
"A Long Walk to Water" is a powerful, gritty story that grabs you and compels you to read to find out what happens to Salva and Nya. The story threads finally come together in the end. This story is highly recommended for middle grade students, ages 10-12. This book truly brings history alive in the classroom.
