About the Author
Avtar Singh is Professor of Electrical Engineering at San Jose State University. Earlier he taught at the City University of New York and the County College of Morris. Before coming to San Jose State University, he was with industry. He has worked for National semiconductor, Anderson Jacobson, and Vivix Corporation, all in the silicon-valley. At San Jose State, Dr. Singh is involved in teaching and research in the areas of DSP implementation, biomedical instrumentation, and programmable devices and processors. He has published a number of articles in his areas of interest. He has also co-authored nine textbooks on Microprocessors.

worst microprocessor book!

Now that I have completed my digital design course and using this required text at San Jose State University (home of the second author), I would like to comment on it.
There are more mistakes in this 3rd edition than in the 2nd edition. Because of the errors, I found it hard to learn for two reasons. Either I've made the mistake (granted the book is correct), or that the authors and editors failed to do their jobs so I have to seek outside help. Even the solutions in the back of the book has obvious errors! I don't believe learning from and paying [this kind of money] for this book is fair to any customer! SJSU students have used the 2nd and 3rd editions as REQUIRED text and paid dearly. (I don't believe that students should be FORCED to buy a book because it is written by a faculty member, especially one this bad! )
Suggestions and recommendations to the authors to correct blatant errors and make improvements were not implemented by the 3rd edition. How can a book create errors from one edition to another? Let me give one simple example. Figure 10-13 on page 470 has the input and output configurations for the 8255 reversed in the 3r edition BUT is correct in the 2nd edition. I also believe a spelling checker was not used as there are typos throughout the book.
Granted there are new materials in the latter part of the book, the older core part of the book should be error-free by the third edition. It has been an extreme headache to study from this book. It has been frustrating, to say the least. To those who wish to waste their money and time, please buy this book. There are other texts less costly and probably better written. The authors need to be more proactive in producing the best possible product when their reputation is on the byline!

Very Interesting and organized

I am taking this class at FDU (where Professor Triebel is teaching this class) and I find that its a very organized text.
there may be a few errors here and there, but it also helps to simply ask the Author for help regarding any possible errors.
Professor Triebel retired from Intel and has intimate knowledge of the 8088/8086 core (as well as the new Itanium) so he's more than qualified in this field.
We are also taking the lab to accompany this class (there's a separate lab manual) and that pretty much bridges the gap between theory and practical applications. The reason being that you can learn the theory behind the instructions in the lecture, but the lab allows you to see the instructions in action.

softcover, low quality print

I have opened the book a total of 4 times. The binding already has a split and I am just waiting
for pages to start to separate.
Many of the illustrations are photos of earlier Intel publication. The print is washed out
and in some cases the font are of a very small size.
So far, we covered the first few chapters, and there seems to be much devoted to simple
opcodes as MOV, but not enough detail on the various adjustment opcodes.
The book has a good collection of study problems (homework).

Invention, Petroski has steadfastly maintained, comes from a failure of design. The paperclip that can only be used in one direction, that becomes easily tangled in a box, or that tears the paper has led inventors to a cycle of improvements and patents. That's the story of the case studies here, many of which Petroski has used in other books?the paperclip, zipper and aluminum can appeared in The Evolution of Useful Things, the pencil in The Pencil; and the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge in Engineers of Dreams. But Petroski still manages to add something new. When talking about the Bay Bridge, for example, he goes into great depth here about the impact of factors far removed from statics, dynamics and hydraulics. He looks at the importance of John Roebling's personal charisma and the impact of the 1879 failure of the Firth of Tay bridge on the subsequent construction of bridges. In the same way, his sections on "Facsimile and Networks" and "Airplanes and Computers" offer very interesting insights into the economics of implementing large-scale projects (fax machines became popular in part because of Federal Express's promotion of its new ZapMail, which turned into a $300 million bath for the company). Those who don't know Petroski's work will find this an enjoyable introduction. Those who do, will appreciate the additional gloss.

Petroski (The Pencil, LJ 3/1/90) has done much to make the nerdy world of engineering interesting and accessible to the reader. Here, he's after a different audience, one interested in the philosophy and cultural study of the process of invention. By examining the relationship between the invention of devices and their refinement over time by others, Petroski identifies design principles that engineers use to make things work. Written as a series of case studies ranging from the paper clip to the zipper to the FAX machine to the Boeing 777, this book is engaging but tends to instruct rather than entertain. Little exercises that ask the reader to, say, imagine refinements to the basic plastic sandwich bag hint at this book's history as an engineering course curriculum, but it's still good reading for those interested in the gestalt of engineering design. What engineering is

Engineers build and design everything from zippers, paper clips, and beer cans to bridges, waterworks, and airplanes. What can such disparate items possibly have in common that they each fall under the heading of engineering?

There's more to it than just fiddling about with plans and models. Engineers think and engineers do. They understand the abstract principles fundamental to one area and then extend these principles to a wide variety of non-obvious applications.

The book devotes a chapter each to several aspects of engineering and illustrates abstract ideas with concrete examples: paper clips and design, pencils and analysis, zippers and development, aluminum cans and failure, fax machines and networks, airplanes and computing, waterworks and society, bridges and politics, and finally buildings and systems.

Chapter two looks at stress analysis of cantilever beams (beams that come out of a wall at a 90 degree angle, e.g. to support a veranda) and how this relates to making better pencils.

In chapter eight, Petroski describes the place of engineering in society. Building a bridge is usually a large scale public project, and the politics of selecting sites and securing funds matter as much as the technical concerns of selecting a design and material.

Each chapter develops the main theme that engineering is much more than tinkering or mastering technical skills. It is the art that gets us from thought to thing.

Great Book for Future Inventors

I found that Henry Petroski's novel, Invention By Design, is extremely informative about the patent process and ways to make sure your designs and ideas are not copyrighted. For an inventor or designer beginning their career, like myself, I found this book very helpful and a genuine advantage for my designs. By reading this novel, it will help you understand and rethink certain aspects of your creations. When sketching the designs for a product, I recommend an Inventors Notebook, full of graph paper and note pages. While making your notebook, make sure to include many dates of events, and discoveries, as this will improve your legitimacy of your concept, if ever needed. The novel will let your ideas flow right onto paper, with near step by step instructions as to, what is next in the process. Should I get this name copyrighted? Could my product be produced for less than the average consumer is willing to pay for such an item? These are a few of the questions that Henry Petroski hits upon in his novel, Invention By Design.

I have gotten this book for a book project in a sophomore physical science class. At first I wasn't very thrilled about the book because I didn't know how complicated it would be to read. On the other hand, I was looking forward to learning about how engineers really do get from thought to thing. Before ordering this book I wanted to know some part of the process of engineers and what goes through their mind when thinking of a certain invention and actually putting it to use. Henry Petroski does a good job in the beginning introduction by explaining engineering ideas and making points on what goes through an engineers mind. Petroski does a good job in his overall outline of the book and how he creates a type of novel that involves simple examples. Petroski talks about a paper clip in his first chapter. I don't know any object that could be more simplistic than a paper clip. What I thought was interesting was that Petroski focused more on the history and about the paper clip than I would have expected. I wasn't reading this book so I could learn about the history of aluminum cans and zippers, I was expecting to learn a certain process that engineers go by and have in mind with all objects. I would recommend this book to anybody interested in the engineering career and history of great engineers.

Always and Forever.

This was an outstanding story. Nic, a Marine colonel, is deployed to Afghanistan for a special assignment. When she is gravely injured by an explosion, her wife Claire comes to be with her. Can their marriage survive this when Nic pushes her away? This was a great story. The author obviously did a great deal of research for this one. Could feel the grit and heat of the desert as well as the warmth of the love the two main characters shared. Another winner from Isabella! I haven't read Always Faithful yet, so I can attest that this one stands on its own.

I loved Always Faithful and could wait to read the next instalment in the lives of Nic and Claire. Isabella didn't disappoint! Forever Faithful is s great read from start to finish and kept me hanging on in the middle!

A real page turner

A great follow up from Always Faithful. The story continues with Nic and Claire. In beautiful Monterey just 3 years later. Everything seems to be going just fine. Until Nic is given orders to go to Afghanistan.
There is also humor since Jordan makes a return appearance. If you loved Always Faithful than you will love Forever Faithful.

It is difficult to feel pity for Sam; she is snobbish, obnoxious, a cheater, and just plain mean. However, her gradual and complete transformation is so convincing that when she finally puts others before herself in order to save another life, it is moving and cathartic. The deepening relationship between Sam and Kent, her childhood friend, is sensitively described and the most complex and compelling relationship in the story. Although somewhat predictable, the plot drives forward and teens will want to see where Sam's choices lead. Haunting, heartbreaking, beautiful

Friday, February 12th should be just another average day for popular, beautiful Samantha Kingston. But it's far from it--her ride home after a late-night party ends in a car accident, only when Sam wakes up, it's Friday, February 12th again. Forced to re-live the last day of her life seven times, Sam struggles to understand the meaning behind these experiences and the significance in her own life and actions. Because only when she can get her last day exactly right will she ever be able to take the next step.

With keen insights and startling candidness, Lauren Oliver's debut novel is a frank, if not at times brutal look at high school social circles and the careless cruelties and bullying that occurs on a daily basis. Sam is one of the mean girls, and she shrugs off her biting words and actions as something that just happens, collateral damage of living through high school. But through every complex and carefully plotted event, Oliver peels back the layers of Sam's life and teaches us all that every little deed has a consequence, and no act goes unnoticed. Though Sam is by no means a likable character at the beginning of the novel, as her character is revealed and she learns a thing or two about the things she has done in her life and the person she has become, she morphs into a true, selfless, and caring heroine, despite her many flaws. The story line is addicting and suspenseful. and as each "day" passes and Sam begins to get things right, the question that has been looming in the back of your mind since the end of the first chapter--What will happen to Sam?--becomes more and more urgent. Oliver is skillful at wielding suspense and heartbreak, making you think hard about the value of your own life and actions.

Before I Fall is a haunting and beautiful book. It will float around at the back of your mind long after you've read it.

If you knew THEN what you know NOW- what would you do?

Sam is the kind of girl we can all hate. Popular, snotty, superior. In life, you could have pointed out her bad behavoir and she probably would have laughed in your face, or honestly, not cared at all. But, in death she is forced to take a good, long look at every choice she has made in her relatively short lifetime.

We get to know Sam and her friends at the beginning of the story, leading up to a crash that takes Sam's life. You have to be patient as you are introduced to them because they are not likeable at all. Just when you think you've had enough of them, they are in a deadly crash. That's not the end of the story, though, only the beginning.

Sam goes into a sort of sleep following the accident and awakens to relive her last day. Will changing something along the way lead to a different result? She tries, and tries again, and again. In fact she gets numerous attempts to "perfect" her last day, hoping she can make the most of her life...and her death if can't undo the accident.

This is not your typical tale of redeeming yourself. It's not so easy to make the changes that Sam needs to make to change fate. She doesn't simply do something new each time she gets a new day. Her first attempts are vastly different with vastly different results. It's not until she puts all the finest pieces together that she thinks she has the best solution. Life is unpredictable and so is death for Sam.

Watching this aggravating girl realize how wrong she has been is satisfying. Seeing her struggle to become a better person with only one day is fascinating. Wondering how (and if) she is going to succeed makes you not want to put this book down. Great read!

One of those feel good books. But

Interesting concept. One of those feel good books. But, it cannot hurt to write down what you really want. Turn it into a symbol. Then destroy the symbol and forget about it. Apparently the Universe gets the idea.. and will give you what you want.. if you're worthy. (rolls eyes)
