These vocab. books perfect for homeschool!

I got this vocabulary book at our local junior college bookstore for my middle school student to use. It is wonderful, and now I am looking at the others in the series. Sort of series anyway. It says this is for the highest reading level books, but my 7th grader has no problems with any of the reading or vocab. words. They are mostly new words to her. I would hope college students would be able to do this with no problem. The chapters are short, we finish one a week, and varied, like music, or theater, or history, etc. They are set up so you can do a lesson a day for maybe 4 days a week. The only odd thing is their analogies, which we skip, not like most analogies and without a teacher guide I do not know what they are looking for. That is only once every few chapters anyway. Oh, and it is strange to have to match a photo to a vocabulary word that really isn't something concrete that can be pictured!

Great for home school though.

Very good if you want to understand why you are the way you are and what to do about it. It helped me at a time in my life when I needed to know so much and felt lost and uncertain about what to do with my life. I learned to put my "parents" experience in it's proper place, how to enjoy my "child" and how to be an "adult". If everyone got what I got out of it, the world would be a better place. When you become a victim, or a persecuter or an enabler you are a slave. When you become a non-judgemental "adult" life is a lot more pleasant both for you and those you deal with. But it takes time to absorb and to change and you have to do a lot of thinking, feeling and understanding along the way.

I first read this book in the early 1970s while I was a psychology major in college. I decided to pick it up again. Although the setting has changed - different wars and an altered political map - it is clear that people have not.

It may seem a little confusing at first, but if you stick with it, a new way of thinking about conversations emerges. The Parent - Adult -Child axis is still incredibly helpful in understanding our own behavior and that of others, and in providing a language with which to find a way of understanding.

Chapter by chapter, the authors present simple, practical steps and illustrate them with examples drawn from their extensive experience around the world, in many different industry sectors and cultures and at all stages of projects from conception through development and into execution. Qualitative and quantitative approaches are covered. Traditional structures and processes are discussed as well as developments in the way projects are conducted, such as outsourcing arrangements and risk-sharing structures like public–private partnerships.

About the Author
Dale Cooper has over twenty-five years of international experience with risk management for large and complex projects. He is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, an Affiliate of the Securities Institute of Australia, a member of the Risk Engineering Society and the Society for Risk Analysis, and an accredited provider of risk management consulting services to government agencies in Australia and New Zealand. Since late 1991, Dale Cooper has run Broadleaf Capital International, a consulting company that specialises in high-level strategic, organisational and project risk analysis, for both public and private sector clients. His risk consulting activities have included assignments in North America, Europe, Australasia, Asia and the Middle East. He is a member of the Standards Australia Technical Committee that developed the risk management standard AS/NZS 4360 and associated handbooks.Stephen Grey is an experienced risk management practitioner specialising in project, organisational and strategic risk applications. He has worked with many private and public sector organisations in the UK, Europe, Australia and New Zealand for over fifteen years. Stephen is actively involved in the development of risk management practices around the world. He is a member of the Risk Engineering Society within the Institution of Engineers (Australia), a member of the Special Interest Group on Project Risk Management of the UK Association for Project Management and Director of Region IV, Asia and Pacific, of the Risk Special Interest Group of the US based Project Management Institute. He is an Associate Director of Broadleaf Capital International.Geoff Raymond is a highly experienced risk management consultant, facilitator and trainer. He has significant recent experience in the conduct of qualitative and quantitative risk assessments, hazard analyses and value management studies in a variety of contexts. Prior to joining Broadleaf Capital International as an Associate Director in 1996, he established the Risk Engineering Services business unit at BHP Engineering. His main activities are in strategic planning, corporate and project risk analysis and risk management training, for both public and private sector clients.Phil Walker had a long career in the Australian Department of Defence, culminating in responsibility for very large defence projects, prior to joining Broadleaf as an Associate Director in 1999. While in Defence, Phil managed very large and complex projects with large multi-skilled teams scattered in many locations worldwide. His skills and expertise in projects centre on business, finance and contractual matters, although he has a strong technical knowledge. Phil has worked with the US Navy for three year in Philadelphia on a number of large scale maritime projects and initiatives.

William James of Harvard wrote, "The greatest revolution of my generation is the discovery that people, by changing their inner attitudes of mind, can change the outer aspects of their lives."
You and your mind are extraordinary. You have 100 billion brain cells, each connected by ganglia and neurons to as many as twenty thousand other cells. The total number of thoughts that you can think is therefore equal to one hundred billion to the twenty thousandth power.
According to brain expert Tony Buzan, this means that the number of ideas you can generate is equal to the number one followed by eight pages of zeroes, more potential ideas than the number of all the molecules in the known universe.
The question is, "How are you using this powerful mental supercomputer?"
You have the mental ability right now to set any goal and achieve everything you could ever want or hope for in life. 10 Percent of Potential

When I was twenty-one, I was impressed when I heard that the average person uses only 10 percent of his or her mental ability. I later learned that the true number is closer to 2 percent. Most people have enormous reserves of mental capacity that they fail to use, that they are apparently saving up for some good reason.
Imagine that you had inherited a bank account containing $1 million and growing regularly with interest. But you only ever accessed twenty thousand dollars of this amount because you lacked the necessary code to acquire the rest of your money. The remainder of this wealth was yours, but you couldn't get at it, because you did not know the correct account number that would release these funds to you.

Your Explanatory Style

Look for the Good

Very often, when you change your perspective, you see things differently, make different decisions, and get different results. Napoleon Hill says in his succes classic Think and Grow Rich�that "within every problem or difficulty there lies the seed of an equal or greater benefit or advantage."
After interviewing more than five hundred of the wealthiest self-made multimillionaires in America, he found they all had certain qualities in common. One of these common denominators was that the wealthy people in his research had developed the habit of always seeking the valuable lesson in every setback or diffuclty. And they always found it.
Most of their fortunes had come about as the result of applying the lessons they had learned through failure and hardship to developing breakthrough products and services that eventually made themr ich. But without the temporary failures and the lessons they contained, they would still be working for wages.
Here is a simple way to transform your thinking to that of the most positive and successful people in our society. Think about the biggest problem that you have in your life today. Now imagine that this problem has been sent to you as a gift, to teach you something. Ask yourself, "What is the lesson or lessons that I can learn from this situation that can help me to be happier and more successful in the future?"
Perhaps your biggest problem today is not a problem at all. Perhaps it is an opportunity. As Henry Ford said, "Failure is merely an opportunity to more intelligently begin again."�

The Great Discovery

Perhaps the greatest discovery in human history is that "you become what you think about—most of the time." Your beliefs, either positive or negative, helpful or hurtful, largely determine everything you do and how you do it.
What do you think about most of the time? And how do you think about it?
As Wayne Dyer wrote, "You don't believe what you see; you see what you already believe."
Jim Rohn said, "Everything you have in your life, you have attracted to yourself by the person you are. You can change your life because you can change your thinking; you can change the person you are."

Overpriced Teradata Textbook

While there are some interesting topics presented, along with some canned scripts which could be of use, this book is a little too simple. It's not worth the over $100 cost. Finally, at this price, a paper edition should have been available, not a Kindle-only edition. I suppose I have biases for Oracle and IBM's DB2, both of which have much better offerings for more reasonable prices.

Lots of virtues to choose from

There are several editions of Bennett's Virtues books. If it helps you choose from among the editions, here's the deal.

This edition, The Book of Virtues for Young People, is intended for children 9-12 and is 384 pages long. It contains familiar childhood stories such as The Fox and The Crow, but also selections by beloved writers such as Walt Whitman, Tolstoy and Emily Dickinson.

The Book of Virtues for Boys and Girls: A Treasury of Great Moral Stories is also intended for children ages 9-12, but it is an abbreviated version of only 208 pages.

The Children's Book of Virtues is intended for children ages 4-8 and is only 112 pages. The stories are chosen for their appropriateness for this young audience (many reviewers mention their dislike of some of the stories in other versions) and include familiar childhood stories such as George Washington and the Cherry Tree and The Tortoise and the Hare.

I thought I was going to buy the one for Boys and Girls, because the cover shows children playing baseball and the introduction is by Doug Flutie and would appeal to my sports-mad son. But in the end, I wanted more choice of stories, and that version just didn't have enough variety. As in all the books, the stories are grouped by theme (Honesty, Loyalty, Faith, Responsibility, etc.), and the Boys and Girls book has only five themes to choose from, half as many as the adult version.

Ultimately, I chose the adult version, The Book of Virtues, because my son is aging out of the younger audiences.

If you want just inspiring stories of real and fictional heroes, Bennett has also collected such stories in The Children's Book of Heroes, which is a brief book as well, just 112 pages and containing 18 stories. And, The Children's Treasury of Virtues combines three of Bennett's books, The Children's Book of America (patriotic stories, songs and poems), The Children's Book of Virtues and The Children's Book of Heroes.

Wonderful for Adults as Well

Although this book is aimed at "young people" and for ages "10 and up" it is a wonderful, interesting, uplifting, thought-provoking, and fantastic read for adults as well! I love this book - I'm 29 years old and I enjoy every fable, tidbit, short story, and examples from history that demonstrate virtues in this book. Easy to read, but not childlike at the same time. I am applying what I have learned from this book in my daily life and life feels so much better to me. I was taught honesty, responsibility, and other "virtues" as a child, but never was exposed to it via short stories and this route of learning. I love this book and highly recommend it to adult individuals of all ages, parents, teachers - EVERYONE. Get a copy for yourself and/or give as a gift. I can't say enough about positive things about this book! :)

Varying quality

Risk: An introduction is a book with varying quality, but suitable for a student audience. At times it presents a clear presentatio of different aspects of risk, e.g. when discussing whether risk originates from uncertainty in "when" (we know accidents happen, and what the outcome will be, but we dont know when) or in "what" (we know something is happening but dont know where it ends). At other places it is sometimes superficial and heavily framed in a Dutch background wigh little reference to the rest of the world.
