However many words there are for brilliant this is all of them!

Melanie is a very special girl. Dr Caldwell calls her ‘our little genius’. Every morning, Melanie waits in her cell to be collected for class. When they come for her, Sergeant keeps his gun pointing at her while two of his people strap her into the wheelchair. She thinks they don’t like her. She jokes that she won’t bite, but they don’t laugh. Melanie loves school. She loves learning about spelling and sums and the world outside the classroom and the children’s cells. She tells her favourite teacher all the things she’ll do when she grows up. Melanie doesn’t know why this makes Miss Justineau look sad.

So. Mr Carey. I have been waiting for another book in another series, some folks will know what I mean, but I thought hey, this one will do to be going on with. Especially when good blogger friend Kate waxed lyrical about it and told me I must read it. Frankly it wasnt a hard sell..

This is an INCREDIBLY difficult book to review without spoilers – I had no idea why Melanie was so special going in, and I’m not going to tell you either, but special she is. And not just because this is a clever, fascinating, addictive story about – ha see you nearly had me – its about THINGS OCCURRING - but because she is ridiculously easy to love, so well written is she. In fact all of the characters pop right off the page for one reason or another.You will either want to protect them with your life or shoot them in the head. Often with no inbetween.

Its a horror story. But not really. Its a fantasy. But then, no not really. There is certainly love there. And loss. And some stand out scene setting. And a heck of a lot of jaw dropping moments. And don’t start reading it just before bed time. You won’t sleep. For various reasons…not all of which will have to do with how eager you are to find out what happens.

When I read a book like this it reminds me why I love to read. Utterly compelling, taking you away from the madness of the real world and into the madness of another…offering a new twist on a popular theme and getting you right at the heart. RIGHT at the heart. Its only the end of January but I would be MOST surprised if this one doesnt end up in my top 5 of the year. And trust me, choosing last years top 5 was hard enough..

PLEASE be careful which reviews you read of this one before you dive in my reading friends. It really is best arrived at with a beautiful blissful ignorance.

An exceptional story, but ignore the synopsis; it's nothing like the writing in the book

The Girl with All the Gifts might be my favorite book of 2014 (so far). It’s certainly in my top 5. Before I discuss the book, I have to discuss the synopsis. I feel like I’ve been complaining about synopses a lot recently, usually because they don’t reflect the tone of the book. This is probably the most egregious example. The synopsis is written as though a very young child with a very limited vocabulary is speaking. You would rightfully assume that the book would be written in this same manner, but you would be wrong. WHY do marketers do this? Are they intentionally trying to turn off readers? I heard about this book from somewhere other than Goodreads, and I’m sure I would never had chosen to read it if he synopsis was all I had to go on. The main character is a 10 year old girl named Melanie, and I could understand the desire to write the synopsis in a young voice IF the MC had that same voice in a first person narrative. But that is not the case here. Melanie is a very intelligent girl, and the narrative is written with an intelligent tone in the third person and doesn’t reflect her voice at all.

Sorry to go on and on about this, but I don’t want the odd choice for the synopsis to discourage anyone from reading the book. Because ALL of you should want to read The Girl with All the Gifts, and I’m going to do my best to tell you why. I’m going to keep it vague, because you need to discover the secrets of the book for yourself.

The story is set in a post-apocalyptic society in the U.K. Melanie and other children attend school classes, which seems normal enough on the surface, but it soon become apparent that something is not quite right, both with the children and with this school. We get hints of the nature of these differences early on, but it takes some time to learn what caused the apocalypse and how Melanie’s world reached this point.

Melanie has what could be called a childhood crush on her favorite teacher, Miss Justineau. Miss Justineau sees something in Melanie that stands out from the other children, and she can’t help responding to Melanie’s adoration, even though she tries to keep an emotional distance. Miss Justineau differs greatly from the other adults in Melanie’s life who treat her with apathy, at best, and shocking cruelty, at worst. It’s not hard to see why Melanie feels such affection for her teacher. The scenes between Melanie and Miss Justineau are heat-breaking. Melanie craves physical and emotional affection, just like every child deserves. But Miss Justineau can only do so much without risking her life and Melanie’s.

The Girl with All the Gifts starts out so strongly, and I thought that there was no way the story could maintain this pace. I was wrong, because the latter part of the book was even better. Melanie makes a decision at the end that has enormous implications. It affected me so much that it took a little while before I could even pick up another book. But was it the right decision? I think so, but that doesn’t mean that I was emotionally prepared for it.

Intelligent and well crafted genre fiction

Do yourself a favour and don’t read the back cover of The Girl With All The Gifts. It won’t ruin the story for you but to my mind, when an author goes to the trouble to set up a clever opening to a well ploughed genre and then marketing decides to undercut that by telling you exactly what the book is like, because hey the point is shifting books… well…

If you like post apocalyptic thrillers with a decent scientific conceit underpinning it and an engaging read, go out and buy this book. Go, do it now.

But if you if you don’t really care or if you are one of those folk who like to know what the story is about before you go and make your investment, read on. But I am going to spoil it. Well, spoil it as much as the back cover does anyway.

All Melanie has ever known, all that she can remember is her room, the classroom, the showers and the corridor. Each day men in uniform come and collect her and take her to the classroom. She has a few different teachers, but her favourite is Miss Justineau. Miss Justineau teaches them about poetry, and Greek myth. The other teachers tell them about the time before the Breakdown, before the Hungries and the wild Junkers.

The back cover of my edition of The Girl With All The Gifts quotes Jenny Colgan of the Sunday Times as labelling it “Kazuo Ishiguro meets The Walking Dead”. I haven’t read any Ishiguro but the link to The Walking Dead sits uncomfortably with me (but I understand it’s shorthand for “this book has Zombies, shambling fans of the Walking Dead will love it”) or certainly not the most apt genre comparison one could make. I’d say it shares a family resemblance to certain works by Richard Matheson.

So yes it has Zombies. It has survivor tension and there is a race on to find a cure for the Hungry pathogen. As much as I like The Walking Dead, The Girl With All The Gifts is a much tighter and tense piece of work(maybe this is where the Ishiguro reference exerts itself) . The action set pieces are limited and brutal but this book earns praise for the maintaining the tension between the Survivors and drip feeding information about the Breakdown and the work towards a cure. This is no endless trudge, this book has a resolution, it has a finishing point and if you are very clued in to the hints Carey drops you might anticipate it. Looking back it’s a wonderful structured book with characters that we want to succeed against the worst Hungries and Humanity can throw up. It’s that hope I think that in the end masks the clues that Carey has dropped.

From a gender perspective The Girl With All The Gifts was good. The lead character is a young girl. The two scientists at the base where the story begins are female, two of the named teachers are female. Of the main cast three out of the five are women. Plenty of women talking to women about things other than men, sometimes not nice things but…

I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw it movie form. I am not sure that it would survive the Hollywood concept of what makes for a good movie though. The Girl With All The Gifts is intelligent and well crafted genre fiction, and while I could put it down, it was very compelling and a joy to return to.

Insomnia not a snooze!

I originally couldn't get into Insomnia as a read and I actually attempted it several times. I would read a few pages, get a little bored, then put it down and try again later on. One rainy Sunday, i picked it up and thought I was going to get past page 100 and if I could do that and still didn't like it, I would not pick it up again. I'm glad I pushed through. The start of the book was extremely slow to me, but I thoroughly enjoyed it once I got into the story. It was a creepy twist on relationships, the passage of time, old age, other worlds, and the thought that we don't always know everything we think we know, even if we have heard about that since childhood. All preconceived notions do not always have truth to them at all. I don't believe there is always an answer to everything, and this book shows this quite well. A great read once you get into it - I would definitely recommend this to everyone, and I would tell them to push through the slow part of the book in the beginning to get to the treasure underneath it all later on.

Something for all.

I bought this book for my Kindle and have read it three times now. As with most Stephen King books you find a little something more each time you read the book. At 69 1/2 years I found a certain bonding with the main characters, which was refreshing. However, it is not a book for old people, it is a book for everyone who just enjoys a good read. Suspense, joy, violence, love, surprise are all intertwined in this book. Another fine job by Mr. King.

One of King's best

This is one of my favorite King novels. I bought it with the audio reading for an 8 hour drive by myself. The total length of this book is 25 hours, so it lasted me there and back and I kept on with it until it was finished. I have read reviews that the beginning is too slow, but I found that the character development was important to the story and I was never bored. I loved that the main characters are actually rather elderly, which is a bit unusual in this genre, but they were endearing and I really liked them - people I would want to know in real life.

Between 1994 and 2002, eight excavation seasons were conducted at Berenike by the University of Delaware and Leiden University, the Netherlands. This book presents the results of the archaeobotanical research of the Roman deposits. It is shown that the study of a transit port such as Berenike, located at the southeastern fringe of the Roman Empire, is highly effective in producing new information on the import of all kinds of luxury items. In addition to the huge quantities of black pepper, plant remains of more than 60 cultivated plant species could be evidenced, several of them for the first time in an archaeobotanical context. For each plant species detailed information on its (possible) origin, its use, its preservation qualities, and the Egyptian subfossil record is provided. The interpretation of the cultivated plants, including the possibilities of cultivation in Berenike proper, is supported by ethnoarchaeobotanical research that has been conducted over the years. The reconstruction of the former environment is based on the many wild plant species that were found in Berenike and the study of the present desert vegetation.

A Dense, Academic Work that is not Easily Accessible

I read this book for a church history class in seminary. The six students all had negative reactions to reading it not because of the subject or thesis but due to the writing style of Chadwick. We all found it to be written in an inaccessible style that proved difficult to read and follow. Despite that shared sentiment, the book offers some valuable insights that reward readers who trudge through it.

Chadwick is undoubtedly a master of the data touched on in this book. He assumes a sophisticated knowledge of the subject among his readers. He makes many unexplained references to people, places and events. He meanders through history, culture, politics and trends. At first glance, the writing seems unorganized and off-track; however, he seems to approach a subject from all angles as he makes his points.

Each chapter seems to stand alone. Some are more direct than others. Chadwick paints liberalism as an ideal presented by rational thinkers hoping to initiate a society of responsible social living in which all individuals shared the opportunity for liberty within a moral and just system. Society should be programmed to promote and foster individuality in behavior and expression. He asserts that Christian conscience was the initial force that began to make Europe "secular" by invoking the liberty and tolerance in society that would allow people to worship according to their consciences without fear of impeachment. Liberal thinkers believed people needed "far more room to act and think than they were allowed by established laws and conventions in European society." (22)

Liberal theology was emboldened by the emphasis on the mind which among liberals led to an equation of religion with philosophy rather than something unique and supernatural. Chadwick suggests that once religion was considered as an intellectual field rather than otherworldly, it became subject to skeptics. As science gained the spotlight through scientists like Darwin, religion was then subjected to the methods of the scientists who based truth on evidence and on what could be proven.

Chadwick discusses the scientists Vogt who in the mid-nineteenth century taught that science had disproved religion. Others like Buchner taught that since science and Darwin had disproved God they have also proven that the universe has no purpose and religious people were deceived and deceivers.

Chadwick devotes a chapter to Marx that is probably the most comprehensible chapter and offers a somewhat sympathetic perspective of Marx. The discussion of Marx' thoughts on religion and human needs is interesting and enlightening.

Chadwick shows that the problem with the liberal-rationalist-Marx view is that religion did not go away. The people did not reject God or faith. As Chadwick asserts, Christianity contains a gospel of hope for humans that is built not upon reason or experience but upon teaching received as revelation. He writes that on justification by faith "was founded the redemption of man, an optimism that, despite chains which bound him to hell, God could raise him up, to mount towards heaven as the eagles fly, to run and not be weary." (36) Liberalism which was based on principles of toleration and liberty was faced with the challenge to tolerate the church or turn against itself.

Chadwick shows how liberalism is constantly challenged by reality itself. Liberalism, by its nature, must allow men the liberty to determine the truths behind the universe and humanity. I think it was this conflict between sentimentalism and reality, provable or unprovable, natural or supernatural, that characterizes the theology of this period as theologians, philosophers, and scientists all tried to define what constituted truth.

Chadwick points out that during this period it was in vogue among secularists not to discover the truth but to criticize what was commonly held to be true. This included the criticism of the historicity of the Biblical narrative, including the life of Jesus portrayed in the gospels. Renan characterizes the age with his writing of the non-supernatural life of Jesus. Jesus becomes the ideal man, someone any person could admire and seek to imitate. Jesus is humanity, and so rather than a God being worshipped, humanity itself is worshipped and glorified. Human progress through science and thought will take responsibility for progress and advancement.

A dense but fascinating book

Owen Chadwick's work examines the meaning and processes of secularization in European society. Chadwick makes some illuminating insights into the various dimensions of secularization. His style, however, is somewhat convoluted and confusing. It requires close reading to extract the important theses in this book.

Chadwick divides his work into two sections corresponding to the two dimensions of secularization--the social and the intellectual. In each section Chadwick makes important contributions to understanding various figures and movements--Marx, Voltaire, August Comte, anticlericalism and critical historiography, to name just a few. Among his most important theses, he postulates that nationalism was a far greater force for secularization than, for example, science. This was certainly true in Italy, where the papacy was a great obstacle to unification of that country.

Chadwick summarizes that the most palpable effect of secularization is not necessarily a shift in intellectual thinking, or even in social action, but in a loss of "providence." After the various advances in natural science, critical historiography, and moral philosophy, the average person no longer felt the strong presence of God in the world. There was no longer the sense that God "counted the hairs on every person's head." This effect was the most important of the secularization of Europe in the nineteenth century, more so than any overt changes in the intellectual or political life of Europe.

This book is dense, as Chadwick intertwines his various theses and examinations of figures in a complex narrative. His prose is poetic and flowing, but he is not interested in merely in laying out facts. He often presumes knowledge of persons and events without any exposition, and dives straight into his penetrating analysis. It takes patience and some background knowledge to fully understand this book, but it is well worth the effort.

Chadwick's study on the Secularization of the European mind in the 19th century is an exceptionally well-written and intensely studied analysis of a vast topic. He does an excellent job of disproving many erred historical theories. The alternative theories he offers are typically well supported; however, some are based on unsound assumption and unfounded generalizations. Perhaps the most noted is his downplaying of the influence of Darwinism. Overall this book is very good and is recommended for anyone interested in the subject. It is not bathroom reading.

The Perfect book for Beginners and Intermediate Lucid Dreamers.

It really is the perfect book for beginners and intermediate lucid dreamers. The book's subtitle is the best way to sum up authors Robert Waggoner and Caroline McCready's approach to lucid dreaming. The book is written like a workbook for lucid dreamers to work through and gauge their progress. The techniques given range from the basic 'Labergian' MILDs to Robert's modified hand technique to ones I have never heard of or seen. I consider myself an advanced lucid dreamer with about six years of frequent lucid dreaming experience. I wish I had a book with this much information as a beginner. Most lucid dreaming books are copies of LaBerge's work or filled with induction techniques that just don't work. I've read them all. This book is impressive for looking at the mechanics of the dream space, the aware nature of dream figures, and the symbolism of the overall dream setting. Robert writes deep psychological insights about the entirety of lucid dreaming and Caroline expresses her fresh spiritual and emotional outlook on healing and meditating in lucid dreaming. The intro and beginning act to impart the basics of lucid dreaming and induction techniques.The bulk of the book looks at the lucid dreamer's role in creating the dream and ways in which manipulating your mindstream (beliefs, expectations, focus, intent, and will) manipulates the dream. The authors mention a completely new concept to lucid dreaming called Projected Mental Overlay. This concept is just one of the many new ideas that have never been written about in other lucid dreaming books. The last few chapters are about more intermediate concepts like healing, meditating, and surrendering to an inner Self. The book is more than enough for any just starting their path into lucid dreaming. I feel that if you're already an intermediate lucid dreamer or even an advanced lucid dreamer like me you will find completely new information on the subject of lucid dreaming that pushes you to consider new possibilities. Now -- I also want to say that this book acts as a stepping stone to Robert's first book, "Lucid Dreaming: Gateway to the Inner Self." After reading this book I would very strongly recommend picking up Robert's first book for an even deeper look into advanced lucid dreaming. In fact these are the books I recommend for lucid dreamers trying to get a complete look into the subject:

Beginners : This book then Robert's first book
Intermediate: This book and Charlie Morley's book
Advanced: Robert Waggoner's "Lucid Dreaming: Gateway to the Inner Self" and Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche's dream yoga book for the spiritually inclined lucid dreamers.

A Practical Lucid Dreaming Manual

I waited eagerly for the release of Roberts new book on lucid dreaming.

This book is prefaced with the notion that it is a simple and straightforward practice book with little theory.

First, there is a brief overview of dream neurology and although it lists some of the current research and use of technology in studying dreams it lacks the synthesis of the topic. But it is not unusual in this field that lacks a coherent scientific theory that explains the phenomenon and helps predict what will/won't work in this field.

The second major idea explored which is something that Robert examined in his first book is control of dream environment. Again as in the first book he mentions the lack of complete control and the use of surfers and the ocean metaphor is employed but fails at providing a lucid thought of what can/can't be controlled and why leaving the reader confused. I do not think that this part of lucid dreaming is explained satisfactorily in any of the currently available books.

Induction methods are explored and begins with the famous hands in your face method. The usual description is provided. In the part about hypnosis the authors provide the insightful idea of being aware not to use emotionally charged induction techniques, a thought that evades most hypnotists trying to sell induction application or CDs.

General explanation of the induction methods highlights again the lack of a general theory explaining the process. There is a myriad of methods but it is not clear why they work.

In the chapter about emotional healing the authors approach the idea that hypnosis and lucid dreaming are but different sides of the same phenomenon. Although never stated plainly it appears to be a concept entertained. This is also a new insight into the process.

The topic of meditation in the lucid dream is explained in good details to get you started and explore for yourself.

Overall the book is a good overview of the topic and to me it appeared as a lighter version of Roberts first book with techniques added on to it.
I wished that the book adopted the kindle narration ( voice whisper sync) method instead of the traditional audiobook format.

Good book from lucid dreaming experts

The book combines a lot of usefull "how to's" with mmore philosophical notions about reality and exploring the psyche.
There is a very thought provoking exercise of meditating while being lucid.

Very happy to have this book! I've been learning (re-learning from secondary school daze) French online with Duolingo, and although they do provide good but brief instruction, I wanted a book to which I could turn whenever I like. I am looking forward to working on both programmes and expect to have a good working knowledge of the language soon. Now, I just need to practice speaking! One note regarding the packaging and condition of the book: it was packed in an oversized, padded envelope which allowed it to slide around inside. Consequently, it arrived with dings and a tear to the paperback covers, front and back. There was also an impression of a ball point pen on the front cover as if someone had used it as support for scribbling to start the ink flow. I bought this as a 'new' book, so I'm a wee bit disappointed that it arrived in a 'used' condition; in a book shop, I would have selected a copy with an undamaged cover. Not a big deal; just a bit peeved.

The not so perfect ally

William Dalrymple knows his subject from the inside—at least as inside as a western writer is able. He lives in India and is proud that his books sell well in the subcontinent. His mastery of the sources and familiarity with both the broad sweep of history and the details of people and places is clear on every page of his essay.

If “the fox knows many things, but the hedgehog knows one big thing” he would, based on this book alone, be an archetypal hedgehog, one who views the world through the lens of a single defining idea, in this case that the decades long involvement of Pakistan’s military and intelligence services in Afghanistan—an involvement that predated the American war in Afghanistan and that will continue after U.S. troops have left—is part of the Pakistan’s fear of and hatred of India

Dalrymple is clear, convincing and writes with authority. “A Deadly Triangle” is recommended to those with an interest in the politics and politics by other means of the subcontinent.

This is a great reference for any engineer that has to design for welds. This manual is straight forward, well written and full of practical examples. The price is surprisingly low for it's quality and content. The book goes beyond welds and covers basic structural design, loads & stress analysis. The text includes numerous diagrams, tables and illustrations.

I've had to use many different design manuals in my career and most of them are overly wordy and needlessly complicated (not to mention over-priced). This text is much easier to understand and use. Highly recommended!

A lively anthology tracing the emergence of the women’s-rights movement in the US during the turbulent antebellum period. Sklar (History/SUNY Binghamton) provides a lengthy introductory essay tracing with vigor and clarity the manner in which, beginning in the 1830s, white and black women in the North began to become active in the abolitionist cause, inspired in many cases by the religious revivals sweeping the nation. While women in the movement at first focused their efforts upon emancipation, the intense criticism that greeted their activities gradually pushed some of them toward an advocacy of women’s rights as well. They discovered that they first had to defend their right to speak at all in a society in which women were expected to restrict their activities to a purely domestic sphere. At the forefront in articulating women’s right to speak and act on moral and political issues were Angelina and Sarah Grimke, the courageous daughters of a Southern slaveowner. During their influential speaking tour in 1837, the eloquent Grimkes asserted that they pleaded “not the cause of the slave only” but also “the cause of woman as a responsible moral being.” Their lectures served both to stimulate support for the abolitionist cause and to encourage other women to begin speaking about rights and responsibilities. It also aroused discomfort among some male abolitionists, concerned that arguments over women’s rights would diffuse moral outrage over slavery. There was, Sarah Grimke argued in a letter to a male colleague, no going back. “To close the doors now . . . would be a violation of our fundamental principle that man and woman are created equal and have the same duties and the same responsibilities as moral beings.” The 54 pieces collected here trace the gradual development of ideas about women’s rights, beginning with Angelina and Sarah, the growing tension that resulted, and the articulation of a separate women’s-rights movement in the early 1840s. The concluding section traces the gradual separation of the women’s movement from abolitionism in the 1850s. About the Author
KATHRYN KISH SKLAR is Distinguished Professor of History at the State University of New York, Binghamton. Her writings focus on the history of women's participation in social movements, women's voluntary organizations, and American public culture. Her books include Catharine Beecher: A Study in American Domesticity (1973) and Florence Kelley and the Nation's Work: The Rise of Women's Political Culture, 1830-1900 (1995), both of which received the Berkshire Prize. She has received Ford, Rockefeller, Guggenheim, and Mellon Foundation Fellowships, as well as fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Center for Advanced Study in the Social and Behavioral Sciences.
