It shows how public health advocates slowly learned to control the terms of the debate and how they discovered that simply establishing tobacco control programs was not enough, that constant vigilance was necessary to protect programs from a hostile legislature and governor. In the end, the California experience proves that it is possible to dramatically change how people think about tobacco and the tobacco industry and to rapidly reduce tobacco consumption. How to fight big tobacco

It's a great handbook on how to organize a campaign to fight unscrupulous big tobacco, using the California experience as the training manual. So, it's a mixture of history and object lesson, written by someone who know how to teach. A different kind of book from the usual history of tobacco, and there's nothing else like it. Highly recommended.

An eye-opening "Must Read" manual for activists

"The Tobacco War" is part social and political history, part "how-to" manual. Not a dry catalogue of events, but written with a sense of the human drama surrounding each twist and turn of the tale. Co-author Stan Glantz, involved so deeply in the movement, offers the most incisive, comprehensive, and definitive perspective on the California anti-tobacco effort available. I was astounded to read of the intrigue and jaw-dropping audacity of the Tobacco Industry and its allies in the State government on one hand, and the incredible courage and tenacity of those fighting it in the most aggressive and effective way in history on the other. The growth in political savvy and will of the American Lung Association, the American Heart Association, and the American Cancer Society is catalogued in detail, as are the machinations of the State legislature, the governor's office, and lobbyists and pressure groups when money comes up for grabs. This is an outstanding text for the social or political scientist, activists of any type, and anyone in state local politics. It is a remarkable and practical instruction manual for anyone in tobacco use prevention today. These heroes have not left the field. Their enemy, the Tobacco Industry, is immortal.

The tobacco industry is one of the most evil industries allowed to operate in America. From child labor to seductive advertising to distribution of a deadly product and ending in mountains of money in political bribes, The US Tobacco Industry has just about every imaginable negative attribute of corporate America, all rolled into one, neat package.

A great book for beginners

A great book for beginners. Different from other books, this book do not suppose the reader have any knowledge about programming language. The way this book introduce knowledge is always "instantiated" with analogues which make my understanding much easier. The conventions are also mentioned, such as use of "$" is not used although it is legit. There are plenty of code examples and questions and exercises.
This is the book I'm looking for. Thanks, authors.

Great Fundamental Book

I had interests in Astrology since childhood, but in India I was not able to find the good books. Although I had leared the hard way of creating Birth-Chart (Janam Patri)through Panchang and some knowledge of my Pandit Jee. Resently I had started reading lots of books about Astrology written by Western and Indian Authors. Both has different approches as Western wrtiers makes the book easy to read while Indian writers narrates more about the subject. This book is great for fundamentals. It clears all the aspects of Vedic Astrology. Only thing you need is you have to create serious interests and then you will be able to follow each and every words. If not, then just go though this book, let it sink and then read again and again. Thanks to Bepin Behari to provide this misterious and auspicious knowledge to the world.

Recommended Reference Guide for Jyotisha Beginners

Like its companion volume, "Planets in Signs and Houses" (2003), this book is a well-organized, portable reference guide to Jyotisha basics. Nicely typeset with clear chapter headings. Assets for the learner include an extensive table of contents, index, glossary, and a variety of handy charts.

Introductory Topics in Part-1 and Part-2 = rashi (signs), bhava (houses), signs (rashi), yogas (combinations), nakshatra (lunar astrology), varga (divisional charts), Kalapurusha (the cosmic man, for medical astrology) and planetary friendships. Part-3 interpretation = more esoteric but still basic enough to guide beginners.

Because this list of topics would be covered in any introductory Jyotisha class, Behari's "Fundamentals" makes a convenient textbook for a first class in Jyotisha or for self-learning. For my beginning classes, I recommend the pair, Vedic Astrology Handbook 1 and Handbook 2. Intermediate students are directed to more comprehensive English texts such as "Light on Life" (1996) and "Three Hundred Important Combinations" (1947, 1983)and others.

The nakshatra descriptions are scaled-down versions from "Myths and Symbols" (1990). These simplified versions = 3-4 paragraphs each, which seems just right for the beginner who is already overwhelmed with the complexity of Jyotisha terminology. Intermediate students can search "Myths and Symbols" for more depth. Behari's drishti patterns seem a bit exotic, esp. for Rahu-Ketu (p 158-160). If the beginner needs more background on planetary aspects (drishti) there is an introductory treatment of Parashari drishti in David Frawley's "The Astrology of the Seers" (1990).

Overall, a right-sized reference guide that is easy to buy and use for a class. Recommended to students and teachers who need an introductory English-language text for ready reference to basic Jyotisha concepts.

Good SECOND place to start....

For me, as a novice of Vedic Astrology, this one was a bit heavy as a place to start my studies. With that said, Vedic astrology is an amazingly complex system...After reading Beneath a Vedic Sky, this one by Behari was a very helpful, natural next step. He does not write it for the Western mind and leaves out things that, as a Westerner, I didn't know. I have found that Beneath a Vedic Sky and this one have been very complimentary to each other.Beneath A Vedic Sky

For students struggling to understand what it means to do qualitative research, Laurel Richardson's book on Writing Strategies is an excellent resource. The book is very helpful in differentiating conventional forms of scientific writing from the more interpretive forms of writing that are typical of qualitative research. The book is very readable. Richardson makes complex ideas accessible.

Most handled book on my bookshelf

After owning this book for many years and reaching for it many times, I decided that I at least owed the book a five star review.

Early in my graduate career I began working with neural networks and discovered this book in a electronic bookshelf available at my university. After printing chapter after chapter to read on subway rides home I ended up buying it for convenience. It gave me the background I needed to code up a basic artificial neural network in C++ and to then extend it to fit my needs.

The style of the writing is the perfect balance of enough detail to understand a concept or method without unnecessary wordiness. Each chapter covers an important aspect of neural network development and application - for exmaple, internode weight initilaization techniques - and acts a sort of mini-review of the most popular methods with a clear explanation of the pros and cons of each.

This is an excellent bookshelf addition for anyone who works with neural networks.

This is a fantastic book. It covers a wide variety of topics in neural network programming and construction and breaks everything down quite nicely. It's a majorly complex subject but this book does a great job of explaining things.

Not for the weak of heart

I bought this 9 or 10 years ago when I became interested in AI, but my math skills were pretty weak at the time. I've since completed a CS & math degree, and I find this book easy to read, thoroughly interesting, and insightful.

Many of the questions I found myself asking while I read were soon answered as I read later sections of the book.

For those considering the purchase and unsure whether they can handle it, for much of the book a decent exposure to calculus will suffice. For a few chapters some exposure to ordinary differential equations would be wise. Numerical Analysis is probably a good idea as well.

An exposure to probability & statistics (not the freshman version) would help as well. The section on initialization techniques talks about various probability distributions when determining methods for initializing weights. If you don't care about the why's, it can be used as a reference for coming up with a scheme for weight initialization, but I find it handy to know why my code is doing something so I better know how to tweak it.

context ok. issues with kindle

the book seems to be well written and makes the subject fairly straightforward . However, i would not recommend reading on a kindle for more than just a review because the figures, equations, charecters, section headings, and graphs do not display, or do not display correctly.

So in my opinion this is text - only crippled version (almost preview one).
