Bellairs at his best.

For me this is Bellairs best Gothic mystery novel for children. It was originally written as an adult novel and was rewritten as a juvenile at the editors request. I think that is what makes it a superior read over Bellairs other juveniles. Get an early edition with the Edward Gorey illustrations to see the book at its best. Gorey himself enjoyed Bellairs books and illustrated the majority of them up till his death.

The walls are alive with the sound of ticking

John Bellairs is best known as the author of sixteen gothic mystery novels for young adults comprising the Lewis Barnavelt, Anthony Monday, and Johnny Dixon series. "The House with a Clock in its Walls" (1973) is the first in the Lewis Barnavelt series.

Lewis is a newly orphaned, plump ten-year-old, who wears "purple corduroy trousers, the kind that go `whip-whip' when you walk." The author often claimed that his imagination got stuck at ten, and here is Lewis, age ten, going to live with his Uncle Jonathan in New Zebedee, Michigan. The year is 1948, and New Zebedee bears a strong resemblance to Marshall, Michigan, where the author was born--- The Cronin House and the GAR (Grand Army of the Republic) Hall still stand in Marshall, just as their counterparts do in New Zebedee.

"The House with a Clock in its Walls" is a whimsical horror tale involving a deceased wizard's scheme to end the world. The book was illustrated by Edward Gorey (speaking of whimsical horror), and was at one time transformed into a made-for-tv movie for children.

So far from what I've read of Bellairs, his characters tend to be elderly eccentrics, or ordinary children (no superkids, here). Lewis is resourceful, but with a child's fears and limitations. Most especially, he is afraid that his uncle won't like him, that the kids in his new school will make fun of him, and that he'll never have a friend. His uncle Jonathan and neighbor, Mrs. Zimmerman are skilled in magic, and are very likeable. They perform magic tricks for Lewis and make him chocolate chip cookies and coca, and generally treat him as a small adult. The one thing Uncle Jonathan is reluctant to talk about is the ticking noise within his old house.

Lewis discovers that his uncle makes midnight excursions throughout the house, stopping and restarting all of the old clocks. He slowly gets involved in the mystery of the undiscovered clock. The wizardly Izzard couple who used to live in the house are both dead, but what did they leave behind and why?

There are some genuinely frightening scenes in "The House with a Clock in its Walls"---most especially when Lewis tries to impress a new friend by stealing one of his uncle's magic books and taking it to the graveyard at midnight on Halloween---but I don't want to spoil the story for you (Hint: there's a scene straight out of "Count Magnus" by M.R. James when the lock pops off of the crypt). Let me say that this is a truly scary book, and if the author's imagination got stuck at ten, he must lived an awesomely spooky tenth year

Interesting book but missing citations to back up the "facts"

I did enjoy this very VERY brief guide and the info it provided, but felt oddly unsettled after. Once I read it again I realized a couple of things: no references to backup studies, success stories or anyone knowledgeable and misinformation about juicing. I felt I was reading an opinion piece stated as fact.

I don't doubt the author's intentions in getting the word out about the benefits of coconut oil, but the lack of any references left me uncomfortable. I also felt that the author was either uninformed about juicing or just needed to say "it's not as good as my thing" when really it's comparing apples and oranges as they say. Green juice fasting won't cause the blood sugar issues mentioned as the green leafies are actually 20 to 30 percent protein, where a fruit juice fast would likely fit the author's description more. I know everyone gets an opinion, but if they want me to believe it I need some proof it isn't simply their opinion.

Must Read for Students of Religion

The second edition of Winkelman's Shamanism is better than the first edition. It offers one of the few perspectives that balances the cultural and neuropsychological aspects of the subject. The author is a noted authority on the anthropology of altered states of consciousness, and the role of extraordinary experiences on religious systems across cultures. This is an area that is way underplayed in histories and socieologies of religions and it is refreshing that the breadth of coverage is so well combined with the biological and neuroscience research behind such experiences. This book is a must read for any serious student of shamanism or the evolution of religious systems.

A Must-read for Modern Shamans

Winkelman takes the elitist anthropological path of shamanism into the west and turns it upside down in this groundbreaking study of shamanic experience. The texts that introduced us to shamanism in the 50s and 60s lacked transparency, sensitivity, neuroscience, and in many cases, respect. Not skirting the strengths or flaws of those early studies, Winkelman builds on them with contemporary science and insight. This text provides an informed modern perspective on a timeless animistic path. Not an easy read, though a necessary one for any student of theology, psychology, religion, and shamanism.

Very inspirational

This is such a wonderful coloring book. I've never seen a book like this that combines designs for coloring in with affirmations and positive sayings. I truly enjoy doing it, especially after a difficult day at work. It relaxes me and brings me back to my centre. I can recommend that for everybody who is new or experienced in this. Can't wait for more.

About the Author

Bruno Simma is a Judge at the International Court of Justice in The Hague. He was formerly Professor of International Law and European Community Law and Director of the Institute of International Law at the University of Munich and Professor of Law at the University of Michigan.

Daniel-Erasmus Khan is Professor of Public International Law at the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Munich.

Georg Nolte is Professor of Public International Law at the Humboldt University in Berlin.

Andreas Paulus is a Judge at Germany's constitutional court. He was formerly Professor of Public and International Law at the University of Gottingen and co-director of its Institute of International and European Law.

A CUP HALF EMPTY, OR HALF FULL?

In the compilation and editing of this scholarly two-volume work, published by the Oxford University Press, the learned editors state that their central objective is to prepare a commentary on the United Nations which tells its story `as faithfully as possible.'

Referencing the subtitle, the Commentary is the joint product of the work of no less than seventy-four authors, approximately two-thirds of whom, interestingly, hail from German universities and institutions, with much of the team effort ably coordinated by Assistant Editor Nikolai Wessendorf.

If you as a lawyer, academic, journalist or researcher ever find yourself in some kind of controversy, dispute, debacle or debate regarding the U.N. and/or the Charter of that body, this is the work of reference to which to turn.

As most people would agree, the aim of the UN is to promulgate and maintain world peace. On any number of occasions it appears to have failed in that attempt (as the `cup half-empty' brigade would noisily remind you) - largely because of the limitations of its charter. But that in no way diminishes its value. Indeed the world community of nations would be diminished without it. But here we take the relentlessly optimistic `cup half-full' view, which we believe this formidable work of reference engenders.

Copiously footnoted and indexed, it is indeed a mine of reference resources for scholars and researchers and certainly specialists in the field of international law. Volume I, for example provides over 100 pages of Tables of Cases and Tables of Instruments -- and with some thirteen pages of abbreviations, you're unlikely to be confused by a UN-generated acronym ever again.

From this point on, the books follow the charter itself, its drafting history, reforms and interpretation -- and following that, the Statute of the International Court of Justice. One might have thought that interpreting the Charter would not present that much difficulty, for it does set out the principles of the organisation with a force and clarity which is almost touching. It is the way in which these principles are applied in the grim reality of conflict which causes the problems and the dissent.

Note, for example, the declaration in San Francisco of June 26 1945 with which the Charter begins: WE THE PEOPLES OF THE UNITED NATIONS DETERMINED to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war, which twice in our lifetime has brought untold sorrow to mankind and to reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person, in the equal rights of men and women... and to promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom.'
It goes on from there, and you can't argue with any of that, can you - except that, unfortunately for world peace - so many individuals and nations can and do.
Nonetheless, the UN remains and idea and an ideal to which, let's hope, more nations will aspire in the fullness of time.
