More than half of the world’s petroleum is found in carbonate rocks — for example, in the Middle East, the former USSR and in North America. These rocks show a bewildering diversity of grains and textures, due in part to the wealth of different fossil organisms that have contributed to carbonate sedimentation, and in part to a wide variety of diagenetic processes that can radically modify textures and obscure the depositional fabric. Careful petrographic study with a polarising microscope is a key element of any study of carbonate sediments — as a companion to field or core logging and as a necessary precursor to geochemical analysis. This atlas, which illustrates in full color a range of features not attempted in any general textbook, is designed as a laboratory manual to keep beside the microscope, and as an aid to identifying grain types and textures in carbonates. It will appeal alike to under-graduate and graduate students and to professionals in teaching institutions, research laboratories and industry. Which sort of seducer could you be: *Siren? *Rake? *Cold Coquette? *Star? *Comedian? *Charismatic? or *Saint? This book will show you which. 'Charm, persuasion, the ability to create illusions: these are some of the many dazzling gifts of the Seducer, the compelling figure who is able to manipulate, mislead and give pleasure all at once. When raised to the level of art, seduction, an indirect and subtle form of power, has toppled empires, won elections and enslaved great minds. In this beautiful, sensually designed book, Greene unearths the two sides of seduction: the characters and the process. Discover who you, or your pursuer, most resembles. Learn, too, the pitfalls of the anti-Seducer. In part II, immerse yourself in the twenty-four manoeuvres and strategies of the seductive process, the ritual by which a seducer gains mastery over their target. Understand how to 'Choose the Right Victim', 'Appear to Be an Object of Desire' and 'Confuse Desire and Reality'. In addition, Greene provides instruction on how to identify victims by type. Each fascinating character and each cunning tactic demonstrates a fundamental truth about who we are, and the targets we've become - or hope to win over. The Art of Seduction is an indispensable primer on the essence of one of history's greatest weapons and the ultimate power trip.

From Library Journal
Touted as a "handbook on the most subtle and effective form of power" and "an indispensable primer on how to take what you want from whomever you want," this book is more than a little creepy. Following on the heels of his 48 Laws of Power, this book continues Greene's gross exploration of social power, this time in the realm of sexual politics. In Part 1, Greene, again paired with "packager" Joost Elffers (Play with Your Food), offers a straight-faced description of the nine types of seductive character, from the "Ideal Lover" to the "Rake." Elffers's contribution comes in the form of numerous quotes by famous contemporary and historical figures tucked into the side margins. Part 2 examines the process of seduction, subdivided into four phases, with chapter headings such as "Master the Art of Insinuation" and "Isolate the Victim." This book will have real appeal for power mongers, gold diggers, and heartless manipulators everywhere. Books such as Beverley East's Finding Mr. Write (LJ 5/1/00) and Jama Clark's What the Hell Do Women Really Want? (Island Flower, 1997) offer advice on the same subject without the distasteful exploitative emphasis. David Valencia, King Cty. Lib. Syst., WA
Copyright 2001 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
Greene is the author of The 48 Laws of Power (1998), a compilation of quotes from throughout history that prescribe methods of obtaining and wielding power. He now adds seduction to the mix of stratagems for those who feel the need to scheme to get what they want. Given the popularity of so-called reality-based television programs, it is clear there is a large audience of such people. Greene, again providing quotes on his topic from philosophers, scientists, playwrights, and novelists, examines "the achievements of the greatest seducers throughout history" and profiles 10 seductive archetypes. Although the tactics Greene advises may be distasteful to some, his literary survey is fascinating. As was Greene's previous work, this one is billed as "A Joost Elffers Production." Elffers is identified--with no hint of embarrassment--as a book "packager." A "quote" from a Newsweek review of The 48 Laws is used to hype the new book, though the actual article in which the quote appeared challenged Greene's credentials as an editor and playwright and offered only lukewarm praise. Review
'What Greene does so masterfully is take us on a fascinating trip into the psyches of the great seducers and offer a wealth of strategies for those who might like to dabble in the murky waters of manipulation themselves. One by one he exposes the techniques of behaviour control used by and against all of us in every area of our lives from business to bedroom. But it is when he explores the scheming psyche of the sexual predator that he is at his most compelling.' Daily Mail 'It unearths the two sides of seduction: the characters and the process. The book prepares you for the ultimate seduction: your boss.' Fran Cutler, the Daily Express

The Art of Seduction: more than manipulation
By Reader
Hmm. I feel like a lot of the negative reviews (my focus) are caught up in labeling this book somehow misogynistic and manipulative at its core. And I certainly agree to an extent: the language that Greene uses is definitely suggestive of manipulation and in many ways focuses on upsetting the power balances that naturally occur in relationships. But I think that those who focus on this point entirely are very cynical. In our modern age, we have lost touch with art. We have lost touch with patience. Even writing this review was a matter of pointing, clicking - and I am running more on a general feeling here than I am attempting to make careful points.

So, to answer to those who labeled this book dangerous, misogynistic, manipulative, superficial, etc., I'd like to make a few points. Greene is careful to explain that "the art of seduction" originates in the feminine mystique, and that men have adopted it because they recognize the great power that it holds. So, good job ladies. Sure, society still has a ways to go in order to truly honor any REAL notion of equality between genders, but if you see a man reading this book, it is because he is trying to master the art that originated in the depths, mysteriousness and natural power of femininity. (And besides, how difficult is it to seduce most men? Many of us are simple creatures.) The arguments about misogyny also seem to originate in our societal attitudes towards sex - but this book is not about how to get laid. Certainly, sexual interactions play a role in seduction, but this book is more about how to win people over.

Now, the manipulative part. The language in this book certainly suggests that manipulation is really they key to seduction. Greene labels the seduced "victims" and "targets", etc. But here's the thing, in my humble opinion: our society is excessively individualistic. We have all been socialized to think of how to "get what we want". And look at the TREMENDOUS deficit in emotional capital that we find in Western society... This book does not talk about seduction in terms of magically forcing people to do what you want. It talks about LEARNING HOW TO FULFILL THE NEEDS OF OTHERS in order to GREATLY increase your personal seductive allure. According to Greene (and for the sake of argument only) seduction is about learning to be more focused on the other person than ourselves. It is a reality that EVERY last one of us has needs, and to a large extent it would seem that altruism is an ideal that is beyond the grasp of humanity as a whole. Period. Whether it is a woman chasing security, or a man seeking gratification, we ALL have needs that long to be fulfilled. Those whom Greene labels as the MOST anti-seductive are the people who think exclusively of their own needs. What if your need is to find the woman of your dreams, and because of your deep love, keep her in your life? Well, this book suggests ways to keep the mystery and spark that we ALL love in a relationship alive and burning. Are there people out there with far shallower needs than are bred by the lofty ideals of love? Absolutely, most of us included (if we really take a good look at ourselves in the mirror). The manipulative language in this book, is perhaps, an effort by Greene to seduce the reader. He appeals to our self interest by labeling those we wish to seduce as targets and victims, and then proceeds to teach us how to step into the mind and heart of that "victim" in order to find creative ways to fulfill the desires of that person. What you do with that knowledge and power will determine whether you are a manipulative scumbag/gold-digger, or a person who is simply trying to improve your social interactions with NOT ONLY the gender of your preference, but people in general.

What I was most struck by in this book was the chapter on "the Anti-Seducer". This chapter really forced me to look at some of my behaviours and to realize, that ultimately, I am acting a large part of the time out of selfishness. My failures in the relationship realm come down to selfishness. But Greene has helped me understand where that selfishness is simply a real need to move forward with my life, or an utter inability to empathize with others. I would venture that most of us have problems with recognizing the distinction in ourselves and others' behaviours.

The book is easy to read and intriguing, and surprisingly enough seems to work. It's a long read, so I would recommend taking notes on anything you find particularly interesting for your own review at a later date, just as a refresher. That's enough of my windbaggery! Hope you all find what you're looking for.

The Authoritative Treatment of this Subject
By Michael T
I still have over a hundred pages to go, but I think I'm far enough in to give a valid assessment. My main criticism at this point is that it is longer than it needs to be. I've been working my way through this for what feels like months now. At 400+ pages it is a somewhat ponderous read. The author uses voluminous references to literature and world history to illustrate his points about various aspects of seduction. A number of the same stories are repeated in different contexts throughout the work. It is an entertaining read, but I found that I could only take so much at a time before I felt like I was getting bogged down and had to take a break and read something else. As a primer, if you are trying to learn things to be a more effective suitor, I found the wealth of material to be a bit overwhelming to take it all in and retain. So many different approaches and character types are covered. It is the most authoritative and exhaustive treatment of this subject I have seen. I think he deliberately uses inflammatory language for effect, such as calling the target of one's affections a victim. In a number of places he says that you are really learning to give people what they want, so you have to learn to be less self-centered and reactive, which is a good thing.

Depends on Your Perspective.
By Jake
Upon reading several reviews here on this book, I completely understand why one may think it's manipulative.. Then there are others who view it oppositely like myself. I'm more than halfway through the book right now and as I have been going about my day I actually feel less "self-absorbed" as the book mentions this several times. How selfless is that? If you look at it in those terms, which is how I CHOSE my direction during this amazing read. Robert Greene is a realist which is what people seem to be afraid of and shy away at times. It shows in his writings which may turn off people. Just like any philosophy, not everything is to be taken to heart. Everyone can certainly apply some of this information and make it their own. It is NOT exclusive to the opposite sex either. It's applicable in life, business, sales, developing new friendships etc. while Robert Greene is my favorite author, I will still not necessarily apply Everything from his books nor agree with everything 100%. Make it your own!

Silent World (National Geographic Adventure Classics), by Jacques Cousteau

Before becoming the man who introduced us to the wonders of the sea through his beloved television series, Jacques Cousteau was better known as an engineer and the inventor of scuba. He chronicled his early days of underwater adventure in The Silent World—a memoir that was an instant, international bestseller upon its publication in 1954. Now, National Geographic presents a 50th anniversary edition of this remarkable book, allowing readers to once again travel under the sea with Cousteau during the turbulent days of World War II.

A worthwhile historical read by the master pioneer.
By Adam Helberg
It was interesting and valuable to read this book both for its historical value as well for the scientific knowledge from such a keen observer and student of the ocean. It's amazing how much of the knowledge and science Cousteau presented in this 1950's book is still valid today. He discuses marine life behavior, the physics of light and physiology among other topics.

The reason I rated it 4 rather than 5 stars is his attitude towards marine life at that time was abominable. True, our view of sea life has changed and I'm judging him by a different standard, still this was a very intelligent man and it's clear he was aware of his cruelty. It's ironic that he feared the large creatures but in fact he and his team were the most dangerous beings in the ocean. He talks about using explosive harpoons, capturing sea mammals to use as displays and pets, trapping octopuses, and using dynamite on fish. Some of this was done for the purpose of making "interesting" underwater films. Of course the book was written over 60 years ago by a pioneer with a different mentality and societal attitudes than today, and I understand his behavior towards marine animals changed later in life.

Very Interesting read
By Greg. G
Since I'm a diver I'm biased by Jacques , a Christopher Columbus if you will of the ocean . While this book was published early in his career. It gives you a start of his explorations and experiments of diving with Fredrick Dumas and why this man was so dedicated to the ocean.Together they were intrumental in developing many of the scuba equipment we now use today. He truely loved the ocean and wanted us to respect it.This is a book to be cherished on ones shelves.
I would offer suggestions to follow up with , "My Father the Captain" by his son Jean Michelle and & "Frogman" by Richard Hyman. Both authors give you a look into what they did while on their explorations on the Calypso , to various parts of the world.

I Have a Voice: How to Stop Stuttering, by Bob G. Bodenhamer

Stuttering has been in the shadows of public awareness for years. Sure, no one dies from stuttering, and it is not pervasive--only one percent of people stutter Yet it is a malady that has not received a great deal of attention. But stuttering is no longer in the shadows. In 2011, The King's Speech, a British historical drama won an Academy Award, and made stuttering part of the public conversation. Moviegoers learned of the embarrassing pain that most People Who Stutter (PWS) suffer. The movie is about the young man who became the King of England just prior to the Second World War It reveals the painful experiences that stuttering created for him. But, even more than that, the speech trainer in the movie brings into focus this shocking fact: Stuttering is not about speech! It is about the 'thinking&' that is mostly unconscious and in 'the back of the mind of the PWS.' In this ground-breaking volume, the author details a completely new approach to treating this debilitating condition. It explains both the structure of stuttering and blocking and provides the cognitive tools for gaining more fluency From identifying the origins of stuttering, through teaching how to think differently in working with stress, the author provides a unique approach to achieving more fluency. Originally published in hardcover under the title Mastering Blocking and Stuttering (ISBN 9781904424406).

Review
"At long last, speech language therapists and those who stutter have tools to address the most overlooked component of stuttering-the habits of thought that drive the speech block. The neuro-semantic processes described in this book will help the PWS to build a framework for fluency that can lead to permanent change." --John C. Harrison, National Stuttering Association

"This book is an excellent resource for speech pathologists in working with the emotional aspects of stuttering. Bob uses clear language and gives great examples that make complex principles easy to understand. As a person who stutters, I am amazed at Bob's keen and accurate insight into the world of a stutterer without being a person who stutters." --Marilee L. Fini, MA

"Full of illuminating questions and practical exercises to help people who stammer 'reframe' speaking. An excellent resource." --Jan Anderson, British Stammering Association

A NLP approach to stuttering
By Judith E. Pearson, Ph.D.
I Have a Voice is a new edition of Bob Bodenhamer's 2005 Mastering Blocking and Stuttering. Stuttering has received public attention with the popularity of movie, The King's Speech. Like the unconventional speech therapist in the movie, Bodenhamer has worked with hundreds of people who stutter (PWS), helping them achieve fluency. His successes and articles on the subject have attracted world-wide recognition. He is a leading expert and pioneer in treating stuttering, stammering, and verbal blocking. His book is for therapists as well as those seeking a self-help approach to the problem.

The premise is that stuttering is a learned behavior rooted in traumatic childhood events that prove detrimental to social relationships and self-esteem. The book draws upon Neuro-Semantics, NLP, and cognitive psychology in defining the components of stuttering and describing strategies for change.

The three tasks for achieving fluency are:
* Develop a healthy self-concept.
* Ignore other's opinions.
* Access personal resources for living successfully.

I Have a Voice shows how to accomplish these outcomes in a therapeutic approach that incorporates NLP interventions for reframing meanings, releasing trauma, changing limiting beliefs, achieving calm, reaching personal empowerment, confronting cognitive distortions, shifting one's perceptions and focus, and developing behavioral flexibility. Bodenhamer estimates 25 to 30 hours of therapy and much at-home practice are required for success. Bob Bodenhamer has produced a definitive, landmark text for treating stuttering. It should be in the hands of every speech therapist.

DR. BODENHAMER'S VOICE IS A CONFIRMING VOICE
By Aphrodite Enterprises
I STUTTERED severely until I was 33 years old. That year, most of my stuttering disappeared. Later, I looked for an explanation of what happened to my stuttering and was referred to a book by Dr. Bob Bodenhamer: "I HAVE A VOICE; HOW TO STOP STUTTERING." This book was one of two books that provided me with an explanation as to to what had gone on in my life before my stuttering disappeared. Hey, listen to me: if you stutter or know someone who stutters, you owe it to yourself to give 'I HAVE A VOICE; HOW TO STOP STUTTERING" a careful read. Ruth Mead

I highly recommend this book. Bobby G. Bodenhamer is a breath of fresh air to the stuttering community and has personally helped me in tremendous ways. He brings amazing insight into how we can look at our stuttering differently. Thank you Bob for your commitment to helping PWS understand themselves and their stuttering patterns.

The Boy Who Loved Too Much: A True Story of Pathological Friendliness, by Jennifer Latson

The poignant story of a boy’s coming-of-age complicated by Williams syndrome, a genetic disorder that makes people biologically incapable of distrust.

What would it be like to see everyone as a friend? Twelve-year-old Eli D’Angelo has a genetic disorder that obliterates social inhibitions, making him irrepressibly friendly, indiscriminately trusting, and unconditionally loving toward everyone he meets. It also makes him enormously vulnerable. Eli lacks the innate skepticism that will help his peers navigate adolescence more safely—and vastly more successfully.

Journalist Jennifer Latson follows Eli over three critical years of his life as his mother, Gayle, must decide whether to shield Eli entirely from the world and its dangers or give him the freedom to find his own way and become his own person.

By intertwining Eli and Gayle’s story with the science and history of Williams syndrome, the book explores the genetic basis of behavior and the quirks of human nature. More than a case study of a rare disorder, however, The Boy Who Loved Too Much is a universal tale about the joys and struggles of raising a child, of growing up, and of being different.

Review
"[Latson's] prose is fresh and engaging, her story leavened with humor to take the edge off the ongoing struggle of characters we have come to care about deeply. It would be a mistake to squeeze this book into the "disease narrative" genre. It transcends that niche, partly through the author's reflections on what our reactions to people with Williams Syndrome have to say about the human condition."
---HOUSTON CHRONICLE

"[Jennifer Latson] skillfully interweaves the science—what we do and don’t know about genetic disorders such as Williams—with a powerful story line. Eli and especially Gayle are beautifully drawn, and their struggles with an unknown future are both unique to their situation and universal to all parents. As the book’s perspective deliberately pans out to include teachers, counselors, family, friends, and, finally, Eli’s entire eighth-grade class, Latson delivers some unforgettable lessons about inclusion and parenthood."
---PUBLISHERS WEEKLY

"[Latson's] book provides a thorough overview of Williams syndrome and its thought-provoking paradox. No doubt life for people with Williams (and those who love them) has its difficulties. But given the state of the world today -- the hate attacks, the divisiveness, the vitriol -- it's hard not to wish that we all had more kind-heartedness and openness, even if our embrace of other humans is only metaphorical."
---THE NEW YORK TIMES

"The narrative is alternately moving and heartbreaking, as Latson walks readers through the tumultuous obstacles that Eli and Gayle face daily. Throughout, Latson demonstrates a sharp, journalistic eye for telling detail and the ability to capture poignant moments without resorting to cliché or overly sappy writing...In this balanced, readable work, Latson effectively and sympathetically captures Eli’s essential humanity and opens a clear window on a little-understood genetic disorder."
---THE BOSTON GLOBE

"Latson blends life concerns and hard medical facts in this widely appealing chronicle of a fascinating disorder."
---BOOKLIST

"The book could have been exploitative, but instead it’s a moving portrait of a mother facing the fact that her child has a different future from the one she imagined...The fascinating journey shows D’Angelo’s mother learning to accept Eli’s differences – and those differences lessening as he matures. I only wish I could find out how their story pans out."
---NEW SCIENTIST

"Latson tells [this] story with great sympathy and eloquence, giving voice to the frustration, anguish, and despair a parent feels when their child struggles with a rare disorder. A well-researched, perceptive exploration of a rare genetic disorder seen through the eyes of a mother and son."
—KIRKUS REVIEWS

"The Boy Who Loved Too Much is an astonishing debut. Before the book crossed my desk, I’d never heard of Williams syndrome, and once I started reading, I could think of little else. This is narrative nonfiction of the highest order—rigorously reported, elegantly told, and nearly impossible to put down. Always empathetic and consistently insightful, Jennifer Latson’s deep dive into Eli’s life not only illuminates an under-known condition but made me rethink the very nature of human connection. I cannot recommend this book highly enough."
—Kate Bolick, author of SPINSTER: Making a Life of One’s Own

“What is the opposite of autism? What’s it like to be born with an insatiable drive to connect, to love others without shyness or reserve? In this humane and fascinating book, Jennifer Latson introduces us to Eli, a boy with the rare genetic disorder of Williams Syndrome. She marvels at his capacity for love but is sensitive as well to the difficulties of raising such a child in an often cruel and unloving world, and the challenges that arise with the emergence of sexual desire. This is a book about a very unusual child, but it’s also a thoughtful and moving exploration into the very nature of affection and love.”
—Paul Bloom, Professor of Psychology at Yale University, and author of AGAINST EMPATHY: The Case for Rational Compassion

“Latson's haunting book is an intimate look at the relationship between a boy with a rare and fascinating genetic disability and his mother, as she learns over time to stop overprotecting him and allow him to take his own path toward independence. There are valuable lessons for all parents here.”
—Steve Silberman, author of NEUROTRIBES: The Legacy of Autism and the Future of Neurodiversity

“Jennifer Latson has written a book of uncommon empathy, a powerful narrative that speaks not only to the love of a mother for her son but to a genetic disorder that poses questions about the nature and limits of love itself.”
—Mimi Swartz, author of POWER FAILURE: The Inside Story of the Collapse of Enron

The Boy Who Loved Too Much One Unlocked
Gayle didn’t know where to turn. She had been driving east for hours on an unfamiliar highway (I-80) in an unfamiliar state (Pennsylvania), searching with increasing desperation for a place to stop for the night. She had been checking each exit since 9 p.m. But every reputable hotel from Clarion to Punxsutawney had been booked full. Now it was past 11. She tapped her crimson fingernails anxiously on the steering wheel.

Twelve-year-old Eli was scribbling with crayons on a notepad in the backseat. His crayons were the fat kind that kindergartners used; Gayle bought them because they were easier for him to grip than the slender version. He clutched a red crayon tightly in his fist and drew furious circles, throwing his full weight into the task. Then he lifted the crayon from the page and stabbed it rapid-fire—a manic pointillist creating a fusillade of dots. A few tore through the paper. He lifted his artwork and admired it in the dome light, which Gayle had left on for him. He chirped with glee, smiling to himself. Then he selected a blue crayon, bent his head over the notepad, and began again. As he worked, he sang a selection of hits from Disney’s Lion King. Every few minutes he asked enthusiastically, “When are we gonna get to the hotel?”

Road trips were a source of great excitement for Eli, since they meant a new cast of characters and new social opportunities he wouldn’t find at home. Home was a town house in a small Connecticut apartment complex where Eli and his mother lived by themselves. Eli’s father hadn’t been around for years.

From his kitchen window Eli often watched other boys his age playing in the parking lot. From the French doors overlooking his back patio, he caught glimpses of them shooting basketballs through the hoop behind the subdivision’s communal grass patch. But he’d never joined them. Even if he’d been invited, Gayle wouldn’t have let him go.

Road trips, however, meant stopping at diners and hotels—places where you could meet new people and see unfamiliar vacuum cleaners and overhead fans, to Eli’s great delight. And this had been a nice, long summer road trip: two days north to Michigan and now two days back. Eli squirmed giddily in anticipation of all the adventure still in store.

“We’ll be there soon, Eli,” Gayle said. Her voice was worried, slightly exasperated. She asked him to sing a little more quietly.

IT WAS NEARLY MIDNIGHT, AND Eli was dozing, when Gayle finally found a motel with a vacancy: a low white-brick building near an oil refinery in Clearfield, Pennsylvania. But as soon as she pulled into the parking lot, she was tempted to turn around and keep driving. The warm air drifting through her open window carried the acrid smell of diesel fuel on a cloud of cigarette smoke. The parking lot was filled with work trucks around which men stood in groups dimly lit by streetlights. Tractor-trailers lined the edges of the parking lot, bordering the motel like a menacing metal hedgerow.

Gayle considered getting back on the highway. If she drove all night, they could be home by morning. But she knew she was too tired. They were stuck here at the Clearfield Budget Inn.

Eli woke up when the car rolled to a stop. He surveyed the landscape enthusiastically, oblivious to the seediness of the place.

“I’ve never been here in a long time!” he exclaimed, clapping his hands together.

Gayle stepped out of the car and into the July heat, and opened the back door to let him out. She could feel the eyes of the men on her, the only woman in their midst, and on Eli, who was now rocking back and forth on his heels with excitement. Both Gayle and Eli were rumpled from hours in the car. Gayle, a youthful forty-one-year-old, wore a purple camisole and capri-length cargo pants that revealed some of her tattoos. On her back, feathery wings spread outward from her spine. Her left shin was covered with a series of colorful images: on the back, a dragonfly; on the left, flaming dice; on the right, a serpent coiled around a sword; and on the front, a red heart with a banner that said “Eli.”

Her long black hair, usually wavy, had gone limp in the muggy heat. She had pulled it up into a clip, revealing the discs that had stretched dime-size holes in her earlobes.

Eli wore a black T-shirt and the baggy denim shorts that Gayle had bought at Kohl’s just before the road trip, hoping these wouldn’t split at the seams like his last pair. She described her son as “husky,” but it was his pear shape that made him hard to shop for. Boys’ clothes weren’t designed with this shape in mind.

She ran a protective hand through Eli’s dark curls. His features were those of a much younger child: chubby cheeks, an upturned nose, and a smile so wide it made his eyes crinkle. They were crinkling now. His face was bright with joy, and he tugged at Gayle’s arm, pulling her toward the light, the trucks, the men. She jerked him forcefully in the other direction.

In the sweltering front office, the motel’s owner, an Indian man with thinning white hair, slid open a thick glass window—Bulletproof, Gayle thought. He looked as tired as Gayle felt. She rummaged through her purse to find her wallet and handed him her credit card. Eli, meanwhile, bounced up from behind her, smiling broadly.

“I’m Eli! What’s your name?” he said, extending a hand to the motel owner. The counter was higher than Eli’s head, but he stood on his tiptoes and strained to reach. The man gave him a quizzical look. Without answering, he reached through the window and shook Eli’s hand.

Turning to Gayle, the motel owner nodded toward the parking lot. “Don’t worry about those guys,” he said. “They’re here for the summer, working construction. They just like to relax out there after work.”

Only slightly reassured, Gayle took the room key.

“He likes me,” Eli declared as they left the office, pointing his thumb toward his own chest.

“I’m sure he does,” Gayle agreed blankly. She was already scanning the row of doors for the number on her key. She slung Eli’s backpack over her shoulder, rolling her suitcase across the uneven pavement with one hand and holding Eli’s hand with the other.

Eli peered at the faces of the men in the parking lot, hopeful that someone would return his gaze, but they looked away when he caught their eyes. One man lit a cigarette; another stubbed one out on the pavement. One man mumbled something too quietly for Gayle to hear. The others laughed.

Apart from the rest of the group, one man sat alone on the sidewalk, his elbows propped on bent knees, his head drooping heavily in his hands. His eyes were closed. Gayle noticed his sinewy arms, his muddy work boots. Maybe he was just tired from a long day, but Gayle’s instincts told her he was more likely drunk or high. She looked for a way around him, but he was on the walkway just in front of her room. There was no other way to go.

She whispered to Eli through clenched teeth, “Do. Not. Say. Anything. To. Him.”

“Why?” Eli replied in an ordinary voice. They were ten feet from the man, and closing in.

Gayle raised a finger to her lips. “Because. He’s sleeping.”

Eli’s eyes never left the stranger. When they were less than an arm’s length from the man, Eli shouted, “Are you sleeping?”

The man raised his head and gave him a dark, bleary look but didn’t speak. Eli grinned at him. The man dropped his head again. Gayle pulled Eli past, fumbled to unlock the door to their room, and dragged Eli inside. She shut the door hard behind her.

The motel room was outdated—forest-green carpeting, purple-and-green-swirled curtains and a pink bedspread—but it looked clean, at least. Gayle checked the mattress ticking for bedbug shells but found none. There was still a faint smell of smoke inside, which grew stronger when she turned on the air conditioner. She could hear the men’s voices outside, even over the rattling of the AC, and wondered if she’d be able to fall asleep here. Eli, meanwhile, pulled off his Velcro shoes and his shorts, dove under the polyester bedspread, and was snoring before the lights went out.

The next morning Gayle spent close to an hour looking for the room key, which she had somehow lost. She dumped out the contents of her suitcase, her purse, and Eli’s backpack. Eli chattered happily while she searched, asking questions she only half answered.

“What are we going to have for breakfast, Mom?”

“I don’t know. We’ll see.”

“We can go to a diner?”

“Maybe. I don’t know what’s around here.”

“I think there’s a diner!”

“Oh, you do?” She couldn’t help but smile at his optimism. He stood at her shoulder, looking up at her expectantly. She set down the backpack she had been rifling through and gave him a hug before continuing her search.

When she kneeled to search under the bed, Eli sprawled atop the shiny pink bedspread and watched her. When she moved into the bathroom, he jumped up and followed her. Gayle crouched to look behind the toilet.

“You can draw a picture of a truck?” Eli asked from the doorway, tilting his head sideways to see her face.

“Not now, Eli. But maybe later.” She opened the cupboard below the sink and looked beneath the extra rolls of toilet paper. She couldn’t really imagine how the key could have gotten under a roll of toilet paper, but she was out of ideas.

“But you can draw it for me?”

“Yes, OK. But later.”

She squeezed past him, back into the bedroom. She pulled the dresser away from the wall in case the key had slipped behind it. It hadn’t. Eli flopped back down on the bed. He cupped his chin in his hand and sighed, growing bored. Gayle rechecked every place she had already looked. The key was nowhere.

Finally she instructed Eli to wait in the room while she flagged down the motel owner. He was also apparently the motel’s one-man housekeeping crew: she saw him a few doors down with a cart full of cleaning supplies. She sheepishly confessed to losing the key.

“I have it,” he said. “You left it in the door last night.”

Gayle’s mind raced with retroactive terror. As if they weren’t vulnerable enough already, she’d made it even easier for danger to creep in. She pictured a lineup of the men who must have passed their door while they slept, and the key turn that would have brought them inside. Not only had the door been unlocked, it had been advertised as such. The dangling key chain might as well have been a neon welcome sign.

Gayle shuddered. This was, after all, the central struggle of her life: trying to shelter her son from the world. Eli himself was perpetually unlocked, open, and vulnerable. He carried a welcome sign wherever he went. Gayle was the only barrier between him and everything that lurked outside the door.

She dashed back to the motel room, which she had left unlocked this time by necessity. Eli’s face was pressed to the window. It lit up when he saw her and, behind her, the motel owner. He waved at both of them ecstatically, as if he were being rescued from a desert island and it had been years since he’d seen another human being.

Narrative journalism at its finest
By keneumey
The Boy Who Loved Too Much is narrative journalism at its finest. Like The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, the book weaves scientific background into a compelling true story. Unlike Henrietta Lacks, here there is no author intrusion.

Latson was a fly on the wall during the tumultuous coming of age for Eli, a boy with Williams syndrome. The little-known syndrome is sometimes called the opposite of autism. Those who have it suffer from being too friendly, too expressive, and too trusting.

Eli's ebullient personality comes alive on the page, making it impossible not to root for him. But his vulnerability and intellectual disability put him at risk. His single mother, Gayle, must be constantly vigilant, rarely letting Eli out of her sight. Her frustration is relatable as she struggles to come to terms with Eli's diagnosis and strives to provide the best possible life for him.

All parents will be able to appreciate the challenges of keeping their children safe and learning to overcome the shame that follows inevitable public meltdowns. The book also will captivate anyone interested in genetics, science, and/or immersive journalism.

Fascinating account of a very special child and a mother’s love
By CAROLE T
Although 'The Boy Who Loved Too Much: A True Story of Pathological Friendliness' may be particularly compelling reading for those who have lived with or worked with a special-needs child—my brother was brain-damaged from birth and I found myself needing more than one Kleenex to get through the first few chapters—it really has something to offer anyone who has parented a child, or navigated the stormy seas of adolescence; in other words, just about all of us.
Ms. Latson’s journalistic background shines through in the clear and carefully researched chapters describing the medical and genetic aspects of Williams syndrome, but what really captured this reader’s attention, and heart, were the chapters telling the story of Gayle and Eli, a mother and son whose lives are much more closely intertwined than most due to this rare genetic condition. The book is organized by alternating the educational chapters with episodes in Eli’s journey through childhood and early adolescence; almost from the beginning it was hard for me to put the book down, as I eagerly looked forward to the next ‘chapter’ in Eli’s life story. I hope the author will write a sequel, because (now that I feel almost like a family member myself) I would love to hear how he gets through high school and early adulthood with such unique gifts and challenges.

great read, well written, moving story
By Jonathan Mitchell
Great read, I'm an individual on the autism spectrum, interested in DD stuff, even related disorders such as Williams Syndrome. Lots of useful information in the book. Very well written and Eli's story is quite moving. This presents a realistic picture of the angst of having a developmental disability from point of view of the child and the angst of a child like that from the point of view of the parent. I'm glad Ms. Latson can give a realistic portrait without fear of being too negative. Unfortunately, in today's climate, it might not be politically correct to write a book like this about autism.
