About the Author
David Kaeli received a BS and PhD in Electrical Engineering from Rutgers University, and an MS in Computer Engineering from Syracuse University. He is the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Programs in the College of Engineering and a Full Processor on the ECE faculty at Northeastern University, Boston, MA where he directs the Northeastern University Computer Architecture Research Laboratory (NUCAR). Prior to joining Northeastern in 1993, Kaeli spent 12 years at IBM, the last 7 at T.J. Watson Research Center, Yorktown Heights, NY.

Dr. Kaeli has co-authored more than 200 critically reviewed publications. His research spans a range of areas including microarchitecture to back-end compilers and software engineering. He leads a number of research projects in the area of GPU Computing. He presently serves as the Chair of the IEEE Technical Committee on Computer Architecture. Dr. Kaeli is an IEEE Fellow and a member of the ACM.

Perhaad Mistry works in AMD’s developer tools group at the Boston Design Center focusing on developing debugging and performance profiling tools for heterogeneous architectures. He is presently focused on debugger architectures for upcoming platforms shared memory and discrete Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) platforms. Perhaad has been working on GPU architectures and parallel programming since CUDA 0.8 in 2007. He has enjoyed implementing medical imaging algorithms for GPGPU platforms and architecture aware data structures for surgical simulators. Perhaad's present work focuses on the design of debuggers and architectural support for performance analysis for the next generation of applications that will target GPU platforms.

Perhaad graduated after 7 years with a PhD from Northeastern University in Electrical and Computer Engineering and was advised by Dr. David Kaeli who the leads Northeastern University Computer Architecture Research Laboratory (NUCAR). Even after graduating, Perhaad is still a member of NUCAR and is advising on research projects on performance analysis of parallel architectures. He received a BS in Electronics Engineering from University of Mumbai and an MS in Computer Engineering from Northeastern University in Boston. He is presently based in Boston.

Dana Schaa received a BS in Computer Engineering from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, and an MS and PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Northeastern University. He works on GPU architecture modeling at AMD, and has interests and expertise that include memory systems, microarchitecture, performance analysis, and general purpose computing on GPUs. His background includes the development OpenCL-based medical imaging applications ranging from real-time visualization of 3D ultrasound to CT image reconstruction in heterogeneous environments. Dana married his wonderful wife Jenny in 2010, and they live together in San Jose with their charming cats.

Indispensible

I'm a biological scientist with little background in mathematics, and none in MATLAB or image processing, but launched myself into it nonetheless. I've bought and read 5-10 books dealing with MATLAB and image processing and this is by far the best, especially for beginners. I was able to progress from knowing next to nothing, to writing code to solve my particular image analysis problems in just a few weeks with the help of this book. I couldn't recommend it more highly, especially as it gives you access to the DIPUM toolbox as well.

I would also recommend Stormy Attway's introductory text on MATLAB if you are a complete newbie like me and need some extra help at the start.

For further reading on MATLAB as applied to image processing and access to more useful functions in the freely available medical imaging toolbox I would recommend "Image Processing with MATLAB: Applications in Medicine and Biology (MATLAB Examples)" and the associated website [...].

Between these three books and two websites/toolboxes you really have it covered.

Great content, disappointing printing quality

I ordered this book ("DIPUM", 2nd ed.) a few weeks ago.

The content is probably the best you can find on this topic. You probably already know the regular Gonzalez' "Digital Image Processing" book, if you have done anything on the topic of image processing before.

"DIPUM" combines "DIP" with many MATLAB recipes, so it focuses more on how to practically do things in MATLAB, and a little less on the theoretical background.

Steven L. Eddins is a co-author of this book. He works for Mathworks, the creators of MATLAB and of the image processing toolbox. In his blog "Steve on Image Processing" he gives a lot of useful advice on how to do image processing with MATLAB, and this book is just as useful.

So why did I rate this book with only two stars?

The reason is the very disappointing printing quality. There are several different prints of the 2nd edition of this book. At least there are two different versions: The first print was done on high quality glossy paper with high contrast. Just the way it's meant to be.
The second print (which I received, when I ordered this book a few weeks ago) was done on non-glossy paper with significantly lower quality. It also lacks contrast, so on many pictures you can't even see the effects that the authors want to show.

I got a copy of the first print from a local library, and a copy of the second print when I ordered this book myself, so I could compare them side by side.

Gatesmark Publishing should be ashamed for releasing such a high-priced title at such a low, unprofessional quality. The content does not deserve that.

I can only recommend you to NOT buy this book, unless Gatesmark Publishing solves the quality issues.
If you want to buy this book anyway, buy a used one (one of the first copies of the 2nd edition).
Or buy the much cheaper "international edition" of this book. Of course, it also has a bad printing quality, but in that case you know it in advance and you don't have to pay 140$!

This book is amazingly helpful if you are doing any sort of image processing using Matlab. Although Matlab's help files are quite good, it does not have the same effectiveness of this book. There are huge amounts of images printed in the book, so if you are looking for a suitable approach to a problem, you can quickly see the possibilities of many of the different functions.

Additionally, purchasers of this book are able to access a large amount of custom image processing functions. I have implemented quite a few of these already into my code. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED BOOK

Ok, so I'm a guy who reads Sandra Brown

She's not someone I'd normally read but I figured it might be an interesting experience. My female colleagues teased me about reading this. Someone told me this was "trashy stuff" (which I found out that it means it deserves a X-rated label of sorts -- I guess that's why it's so appealing!). Anyway, I told them that a good "salesman" (I'm a librarian) has to know all his wares, so...

The plot is nothing to shout about. I felt it was the typical "hero gets his girl" romance story, where all the women seem hungry for men, and the men (looks not withstanding) seem to get the women. Hmm... was this book really written for women?

It's entertaining read, really. So I gave it 4-stars. It doesn't set out to be intellectual stuff in the first place, and like any adult Romance novel, it has its fair share of love scenes. All in clean fun, and some love scenes are quite amusing 'cos it's so cliche. A good read for those who want to just lose themselves for a few hours on the train, or before bed.

I can now understand why it's popular among women readers. Heck, men should read such books once in a while.

Decent Story With Unlikeable Characters

Dr. Lara Mallory is a fallen woman since a tabloid incident involving her and Senator Clark Tackett. She had been married at the time, and found anything but a forgiving attitude following the scandal. Finally, after Clark Tackett dies and leaves her a medical practice in his home town of Eden Pass, Texas, she decides to start over there. Besides, she believes the Tackett family owes her, and she's in town to collect a favor from Clark's younger brother, notorious playboy Key. Things are even tougher in Eden Pass, however, because Clark's powerful mother, Jody Tackett, has it out for her. Key seems to share his mother's low opinion, as does his mouse of a sister, Janellen, and the rest of the town. Key despises himself for falling for his dead brother's bimbo, but he can't seem to resist her. At the same time, 33-year-old Janellen is finally breaking out of her shell. When an ex-con named Bowie Cato comes in to Tackett Oil looking for a job, there's something compelling about him, and pretty soon Janellen starts restyling her hair and wearing make-up while she and Bowie sneak around to build their romance.

Sandra Brown can write one heck of a gripping thriller, but sometimes her books seem to have somewhat of a hard edge to them, and this is one of those books. It's as if the author was undergoing difficult personal turmoil at the time, and it came out in her writing. The judgmental attitude that pervades this novel seems appropriate for a small town like Eden Pass, but doesn't fit quite so well with the rest of the country, considering that infidelity did not sink the political aspirations of Bill Clinton, and notoriety has become a form of fame. She tosses words like whore, tramp, and trash around quite liberally, which made it difficult to warm to several of the characters. Perhaps it was done on purpose to underscore the hypocrisy inherent in these characters, but it was still somewhat distasteful.

The story was a good one, with a few good twists and turns along the way, but I also was not horribly fond of the ending. She created and fleshed out a couple of characters simply to kill them off at the end, and another rather innocuous character meets a bad end that didn't seem fitting to his actions throughout the book. Aside from those complaints, however, this is a pretty good novel with a compelling storyline. I just think I would have liked it better if everyone within its pages wasn't quite so mean.

DO NOT READ THE REVIEW FROM 'SMOKE - OKEY DOKE.' THIS PERSON HAS PUT IN A MAJOR SPOILER RIGHT IN THEIR FIRST PARAGRAPH. DO NOT BE TEMPTED TO LOOK! IT WILL RUIN THE BIG SURPRISE ENDING!!!

This book is awesome. I absolutely LOVED it. It was so hard to put down and I thought about it long after I finished. This book is right up there with Chill Factor, maybe better. If you like Sandra Brown or if you've never read her, don't miss this one! The characters were outstanding and Sandra really worked overtime to include difficult situations including foreign-country information - all the while maintaining believability and intrigue. I absolutely think this book should have been made into a movie. It would be a chick flick, but a damn good one!

About the Author

Lars Ohrstrom, Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden

Lars Ohrstrom is a Swedish inorganic chemist who has also worked in France, Botswana, Switzerland, and the USA. He was educated at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm and currently he is professor at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg. At Chalmers he has devoted much time to teaching and curriculum development for the first year chemistry courses and recently he has made a number of popular science podcasts for Chemistry World magazine. His main research interest is in Metal-Organic Frameworks, which are new types of potentially porous materials with budding technological applications, especially in green and sustainable chemical manufacturing.

About the Author
Now regarded by many as the world authority on Indian food, Madhur Jaffrey was born in Delhi and is an award-winning actress and bestselling cookery author. Her first book, An Invitation to Indian Cookery, was published in 1973 and since then she has written over 15 cookbooks, now considered classics in their field, including Madhur Jaffrey's Ultimate Curry Bible and Madhur Jaffrey's World Vegetarian. She has appeared in over 20 films, including Merchant Ivory's Heat and Dust and Cotton Mary. In 2006 she published her memoir of childhood, Climbing the Mango Trees.

Curries good enough to please the zealots!

I was lucky enough to have a friend from the UK host a curry dinner using the recipes from this book. I was blown away by the authenticity of the curries and the ease with which she was able to make them. I was that taken with the quality of recipes I bought my own copy. I haven't been disappointed.

Seriously, if you want to taste authentic curries without having to travel to Asia, try this book. Just make sure you buy fresh herbs and spices. I recommend buying smaller amounts, so that you only use what you need. That way the spices don't go stale on you.

From a Dude, who learned from this book, thank God

I was a Type I kind of misogynist, very subtle but controlling husband, and I was horrified to realize I had this issue, lucky for my wife someone got her this book because of course, I was always "right" in our "christian couseling" and someone finally saw my lack of feelings, and all that junk and fingered me out, and when i realized what was going on, this subtle thing, I went to PROFESSIONAL counseling for quite a while and had to really "come out" of my shell and be a REAL man, this book was the begining, and a super life saver, that was 8 years into my marriage, now, 11 years later, on my 19th year of marriage I am the true man my wife always dreamed of an I like myself better too. I would say in this sad day where fathers are wimps and mohters are controlling (for good reason) that there is an epidemic and will continue to be an epidemic of young men who have no idea what real manhood is about and this book is before it's time, so sad to see, but if you search, the truth is out there, you gotta just really want it, this book provides some amazing truth, should be re-printed a zillion times for people.

You're Not Alone

This is a great book!! After you're done reading this, please read "Verbally Abusive Relationships - How to recognize them and how to respond" by Patricia Evans. This is a secular book but it is great!!! I see myself and my husband throughout these books and these books give you courage to make changes - but you need a good therapist that is well versed in this area to help you. If after your therapy and reading you are seriously considering divorce, you will need to feel a lot of God's Grace and to help you realize that He has plenty for you, read: "Breaking and Mending - Divorce and God's Grace" by Mary Lou Redding. To the Pastors, Elders, Home Group Leaders and especially the regular parishoners - don't judge us lest you be judged. Read these books before you shake your fingers at us, whisper behind our backs, ask us to leave your church, tell us we're not being spiritual enough, and we aren't spending time in the Word. Instead offer us your support, love, and compassion. Believe us that we have considered all our options, that we have given it a "fair chance" and we are taking our children into consideration. While some of us may not be able to break the generations of divorce, we can break the generations of abuse. We have spent many nights crying and praying over our decision but only after spending YEARS on our knees praying for a miracle in our marriage,going to counselor after counselor. Meanwhile, our husbands take no responsibility, refuse to do any work or do minimal counseling. I am starting to believe that what God wants for me and my children is a life of peace and joy and we can't do that when we're living a life of hell. Abuse is abuse whether it's physical or verbal. P.S. If you are a marriage counselor, please be loving & humble enough to admit when you have reached your knowledge and refer wives like us to those that are trained in this area - even if you suspect it!

Is this my biography or what?

I can't say enough good things about this book. I bet I have read it ten times and I'm still reeling from the insightfulness of it. If you are married to a man--or in the process of separation or divorce from one--who thinks women are sex objects, baby machines, and irrational ditzes, given to men by God to slave for the men and "submit" to their abuse, AND HE CLAIMS TO BE A CHRISTIAN, get this book!!!
This book has a wealth of stories about real couples with whom Dr. Rinck has interacted, that you will really be able to relate to if you are married to a cold, emotionless (except for lust and rage) "Christian" male chauvinist. Dr. Rinck also does a good job of separating the controversies about biblical interpretation on male and female roles from the grim reality of domestic abuse among Christians, on which everyone should be able to agree.
When I read this book, it gave me the strength to continue with my divorce and not go back to a nightmarish marriage. I was given enough insight to see through my husband's fog machine of religious verbiage about "forgiving" and "starting over in Christ" for the manipulation that it was. And all of the nights of crying into my pillow, wondering whether I was losing my mind and feeling guilty because my "loving Christian" husband kept viciously turning on me for no reason, suddenly made sense.
What can I say? I was blind, but now I see. And I have this author to thank for it.

Well we all need to give Thanks to Riley Hart for bringing us back to Blackcreek once again. It is such an appropriate time of the year for Return to be released and yes I always had hoped that Riley would one last time bring us back to where it all started with these amazing men.

The book revolves around all three couples Braden and Wes, Gavin and Mason and Cooper and Noah. Their lives have changed and all for he best so there is misconception here for the readers.

Braden is once again up to something that has Wes a little uneasy.

Gavin and Mason are both on a mission of epic portions.

Cooper and Noah.....well this is were it all began so you know how Cooper can be.

Yes it is a happy story and no I will not tell you what goes on with each couple that's Riley's job not mine as a reviewer.

I will tell you this however, if you loved each of the stories from Collide, Stay and Pretend than you will be forever grateful to Ms. Riley that you read Return to Blackcreek.

Fans of the Blackcreek series...you don't want to miss this! Lots of fun, sweet, sexy times. And plenty of surprises as we catch up with our 3 favorite couples.

I don't do spoilers but I will say this...all the awards for Cooper! ;)
So many feels for all 3 stories and the Epilogue was beyond perfect!

It was so good to hear from all the fellows and their family from Blackcreek. These three stories was so touching to read and such great conclusions to the three books. These guys have so much love for each other and their friends and families. If you read all three books you should definitely get this one.
