A Clear and Concise jumpstart book on NT Programming

Herbert Schildt does a good job communcating the philosophy of NT programming. He writes clearly and concisely making this book an easy read. After two chapters I felt I could write a simple NT program, after that to covers each aspect of NT programming from GUI controls to multithreaded programming.

Excellent beginning for aspiring Win32 developers

This book is an excellent primer to using the Win32 API. Unlike the title suggests, you will be able to program Windows 95/98, NT 4, and even Win16 after reading this book. It teaches core API, rather than MFC or ATL. I would consider this almost a prerequisite to learning either of those two technologies.
A really good investment for C/C++ programmers of all levels who want to program Windows. Even if you never actually program any of the examples in the book, it will really give you a solid fundamental understanding of how Windows programming works at the ground level, allowing you to utilize MFC and ATL technologies to their fullest.

Helpful Reflection Material

Two recurring themes of achievers are mentioned in the first few pages of this book, the importance of toughminded optimism and the power of persistence. It is in that spirit that Gardner develops his topic. With the inevitability of change, openness to new experience is vital to self-renewal he claims. Being active in intentional change leads to growth rather than change by default he explains. Knowing how to creatively interact with changes in the environment is a learned ability that can lead to the development of new potentialities Gardner writes.
This interactive process is experienced at the individual level also. Gardner describes healthy self-renewing people as those who both give and accept love. They depend on other people and are capable of having other people depend on them.
Passion is part of the self-renewed life. He says people of that bent know they must have conviction about what they are doing and if they don't, they need to find something they can have conviction about.
The principles he describes at the individual level have implications collectively as well. He goes on to state that "it is important that a society create an atmostphere that encourages effort, striving and vigorous performance" (p. 20). It is within social systems that individuals make their contributions. A lot of wise insight is provided in this book. He leaves the readers better off than when they picked up the book to read.

Best book I've read in at least 10 years

This is NOT a self-help, pop psychology book.
This IS a profoundly eloquent, deeply perceptive, compelling set of antidotes to soundbites.
It is timeless. It puts forth pragmatic and resonant ways of navigating the complexities of dynamic change within the necessary stability of society.
Gardner's observations on innovation, creativity, motivation are quietly inspiring.

I purchased this book as a course requirement but will continue to use this as a renewal product to recharge the batteries. When you are feeling stagnant, this is a great book to read before you go out and try to change your world.

A New Edition of a Classic!

The Techniques of Judo by Takagaki and Sharp is a reprint of a very comprehensive and well-written text first published in 1957. It contains some techniques seldom taught in modern practice, such as Ganseki Otoshi and Yama Arashi, and it has extensive notes on counters and defenses. I am a sixth degree, and my highly-prized first edition is well worn with years of research. The contest illustrations are breathtaking examples of flawless technique, and the "flavor" of the book speaks volumes about martial spirit and a style of Judo seldom seen in these days. Harold Sharp is well known for his work on another classic Judo text first published in 1956 with Kiyoshi Kobayashi, entitled The Sport of Judo. Together, they are an impresive compendium of martial information and Judo history. I give the Techniques of Judo to my advanced students, so they won't forget that Judo is a martial art, not just a game.

A great Judo text!

This is one of the better (of many) introductory / intermediate Judo books available. "Techniques of Judo" briefly covers the basics (bowing, calisthenics, postures, falling, holding, unbalancing the opponent) and moves on to the core of the book, which is throws. This includes hand throws, hip throws, leg throws, and back and side throws. The four concluding chapters cover grappling techniques, including holds, strangling holds, and armlock techniques.
Each technique has about 4 or 5 photographs clearly showing the progression of the move, and 3 to 4 additional photographs showing alternate variations or a counter to the move. What separates this book from the pack is the excellent textual detail that is included with each technique. The authors do a fantastic job of presenting the dynamics associated with proper execution of the throw. The numerous variations and counters included in this text will make it a Judo text with lasting value.

A book with no-nonsense tactics that will help you improve your email communication skills

Despite the huge advances in communications and the little improvement in email systems, email is here to stay. �And it makes sense, because email remains one of the most effective and frictionless form of communications.�

Reading, writing, and answering emails consumes a significant amount of everybody's time.
According to a 2012 McKinsey study cited by Osman, the average US worker spends 28% of his/her workweek reading and responding to email. �Most people recognize that they should do something about how they deal with mail, the actual number of people taking some real action is small.�

This book is not about managing your inbox --no "inbox zero" pretentions here--, but about down-to-earth tactics to help you and your team become better and more effective communicators. � The value of the book is not in its novelty --"There’s nothing earth-shattering about the contents of this book. �In fact, many of my tips are common sense that you’ve probably read somewhere before"-- but in that it offers proven best practices that you can adopt immediately, and that you can share with your team.

The tactics can be divided in two groups, tactics 1 to 5 being the most important and effective ones. �"If you take away a handful of lessons from this entire book, they should be those five tactics. They are your 80/ 20—the 20% of actions that will produce 80% of your results." �These 5 tactics are about how to write meaninful subject lines, keeping the content of your emails short and to the point, and assigning tasks using the "3W"s:

�– The�Who. Use the name of a single person of the name of the persons, don't adress people using "all", "team", etc.
�
– The What. �Don't be ambiguous and avoid making assumptions.

– The When. �The exact time and date a task needs to be completed by. �Always use a deadline, even if it's fake.

The remaining 13 tactics in the book cover other no-nonsense advice like �why you should steer away from asking open-ended questions in mails, how to use delayed delivery for sending emails when they are most likely to be read, and the maybe the most important one: �do not hit reply-all when only the original sender needs to read your message.

Hassan Osman has vast experience managing projects with large, geographically distributed teams. �His previous book, Influencing Virtual Teams, offered no-nonsense tactics to help you managing your team. �I think his new book Don't Reply All will �benefit anybody whose work involves using email for communicating with coworkers and clients.

Short and simple but effective tactics for better emails

Even with my college degree in English, I still find writing effective emails to be a challenge. Even when I think I've crafted the perfect request, I'm surprised by the recipients who didn't understand. Thanks to this short but informative book, I have identified several issues to address. In my work, I deal with many complex emails due to contracts and regulations, and I love the idea of using subheadings. Not sure why I didn't think of that. The "3Ws" will become my mantra "who, what, when" (assign work to individuals, give exact tasks, and set deadlines even if they are not in stone). I've also asked my boss if we can use his quick summary handout for internal training. I strongly urge you to spend an hour reading "Don't Reply All." Even if you don't learn something new, you will find validation if you are currently practicing some of these tactics.

Crisp, clear, and informative

The author of Influencing Virtual Teams: 17 Tactics That Get Things Done with Your Remote Employees is back. Hassan has a very crisp and clear style. If you'd like to learn good tactics for better email etiquette, pick up this book. He lays each part of the book out very clearly.

When I worked at a software company, the primary method of communication was e-mail, as is the case for most of corporate America. It felt like I was constantly being bombarded with emails. I think that a lot of people would benefit from reading this book.

About the Author
Frantz Fanon (1925 - 1961) was an author, psychoanalyst, and revolutionary from Martinique. He was the pre-eminent thinker of the 20th century on the issue of decolonisation and the psychopathology of colonisation, and his works have inspired anti-colonial liberation movements for over half a century. He is also the author of the classic The Wretched of the Earth.

Black Skin White Masks

Frantz Fanon was a black man born in the French colony and island of Martinique. He trained as a doctor specialising in psychiatry. He was deeply concerned about the impact of colonialism on the people of colour, particularly how it humiliated them, destroyed their culture, values and dignity. This led him to get involved in the Algerian war of independence in the 1950s.

The book "Black Skin, White Masks" was written almost fifty years ago. This was during the time when decolonisation of the African continent and elsewhere was gathering momentum.

To adequately capture and assimilate Fanon's thinking of the question of colonialism and racism and their impact on the coloured people, one also needs to read Fanon's other great works: "The Wretched of the Earth" and "Dying Colonialism". Here one can see his anger and the background to his conclusion that it was only through violence that people of colour could liberate themselves from colonialism, particularly from mental bondage and inferiority complex that accompanied colonial subjugation.

In "Black Skin, White Masks", Fanon develops his thesis about the impact of inferiority complex of subjugated peoples and the alienation of some of them from their kind resulting in their wish to identified with the colonialists or imitate the European. There are a number of celebrated and classic cases of coloured people who have tried various formulas to change the colour of their skins, the tone of their voices or their names so that they sound more civilised (European).

Fanon's ideas about how the coloured people can liberate themselves (physically and mentally) influenced many leaders of revolutionary movements that were fighting colonialism. Some organisations in the USA, such as the Nation of Islam, appear to embrace a lot of Fanon's ideas and thinking.

The book is recommended reading for those who wish to understand the impact of colonialism on the colonised around the world and their different reactions to this menace.

"Girasole. It's the word for sunflower in Italian. It means turn toward the sun."

Turn Towards the Sun is a sweet and light story about second chances in life. Ava and Enzo have both been emotionally burned in the past. Throughout this book, we're taken through their romantic and steamy journey where we see them both learn to love again, freely and fully.

"I want you to feel like the most amazing, most special, most beautiful woman on the planet. Because to me, you are."

Hello yummy Italian. Enzo had me swooning A LOT. How could he not? He's a hot and successful alpha male who's very protective of Ava! Oh, and did I mention, ITALIAN? *fans self* He was indeed very dreamy.

"I am yours, Ava. All of me. I want to give you my all. Loving you and making you happy is my top priority. You're all I need."

I also really liked Ava. Moving to a new state after a bad break up, she begins her journey of starting over. She is a genuine and strong character that knows what she wants and goes for it. She doesn't put up with anyone's crap -- especially, Anna's. In all honesty, Ava is one lucky girl! Enzo is her true prince charming... with an accent!! *wink*

Just like Ava and Enzo, the secondary characters in this book were great and very well developed. Not counting the fact that Enzo and Ava fell in love rather quickly, I have to say that the story line had a very realistic pace. Some parts may have been a tad slow for my personal taste, but it's an overall very enjoyable read. As for the ending, CLIFFHANGER ALERT! It pretty much ended right in the middle of a scene. And what a scene.

If you're looking for a sweet, light, and steamy love story, Turn Towards the Sun is book for you!

I read this book in one day. I absolutely loved it. The characters are all very strong and each bring something to the story. I cannot wait until book 2 comes out. Jennifer Domenico captures your attention from the first paragraph.

Romance lovers, chick lit lovers, erotic romance lovers this is for you MustRead

I am a HUGE fan of this author so this was a super easy read. You know who will love it? romance, chick lit lovers and fans of erotic romance. The entire book just flows. From Enzo and Ava meeting on an airplane to the beginning of their love affair. He is the most eligible bachelor and she is a scorned woman. It was a semi-fairy tale read for me. I love the scenes with Francesca who is one of Enzo's sisters. She is a bright ray of sunshine, a designer and a fiercely loyal sibling.

Enzo owns Girasole, a beautiful resort hotel for the wealthy. He is shocked when she doesn't know who he is. For Ava it doesn't matter. She liked him and yes she was attracted to him but it was the greatest build up. For me she was a great character and not a gold digging tramp, like someone else. I think Ava and Enzo were attracted to each other but it wasn't like the bull crap sort of love, this was genuine and real. I love them! I fell like I am gushing!

Gushing over the wedding and their plans together. Their is a BIG danger lurking and at the end it is sort of revealed. Ive got the next book so here goes.... Thanks to Jennifer Domenico for creating a marvelous family!

One of the great philosophy books

I studied under Michael Scriven at UC Berkeley and was fortunate for it. He is and a maverick. During the 1960's in a class on Marxism he argued against the revolution: what if it went bad? Very unpopular with the Berkeley radicals.
He is brilliant and one of the smartest people I have met, including Buckminster Fuller and Gregory Bateson.

He grew up in the Australian outback and got a Ph.D. in Philosophy from Oxford.
