Chris Spicer lives with his wife, Tina, in the United Kingdom, having recently returned from serving as Teaching Pastor for a large charismatic church in America's Midwest. As well as preaching and teaching in various churches, Chris now has more time to spend with his four amazing adult children and five rockstar grandchildren. He has been employed as a carpenter, businessman, senior pastor, teacher and Bible college principal, but he is first and foremost a husband, father and grandfather.

A must buy for all Dads AND mums

The title says it all. I am only half through this book but feel compelled to tell all the dads out there that this is a great buy - a must read for dads AND mums. I think I've been through the full range of emotions already; laughter; tears; sadness; regret. I love the author's personal frankness, his linkage back to scripture and his use of everyday analogies. A gifted storyteller. It's also good that the book enables you to recall those things that you did well! I'm going to get my kids to read it too then they'll realise that there are no perfect fathers out there! Not only will dads appreciate this but all those with a passion for leadership development. It only takes a little adaption to relate the learning points back to the office. Do yourself and those you care about, a favour and order this book.

Making therapists redundant?

I confess to being in tears as I read No Perfect Fathers Here. First I was challenged as a father and grandfather about the continued importance and place of my own fathering skills.

Second, I was inspired to continue my work as a therapist to help people who have been deeply affected by poor fathering in their childhood. Working for 20 years as a therapist - first as a counsellor, then as a psychotherapist and play therapist - I have come across literally hundreds of people who can trace their emotional difficulties directly to problems with father-figures. The man/men in their lives have abandoned, abused, ignored or belittled them. It sometimes seems like an international epidemic.

John Bowlby, the great attachment theorist, saw the importance of the baby and small child bonding with both father and mother. Now his son, Sir Richard Bowlby, has taken up his father's mantle. Quoting a 25-year study, he has pointed out that babies and toddlers played with by a man such as a father grow into their 20s with more emotional resources and balance than those where no male figure was present.

In this book Chris Spicer scratches where society itches in this vital area. He sees a father as coach, cheerleader, composer, champion and many more. Using vignettes of real people, he stresses the importance of consistent, loving fathering.

He warns readers, in a tongue-in-cheek way, that this role is not easy. Fatherhood, he says, `may seriously affect your mental health and sense of physical well-being. Should not be taken lightly without first consulting a doctor, minister, bank manager and therapist, as this role will invade your privacy, test your sanity and irreversibly damage your prosperity' (page 29).

This book is required reading for all fathers, fathers-to-be, grandfathers and uncles. I also recommend it to single men of all ages. They can be fathers to the fatherless of society - children growing up in single-parent families, colleagues at work or in church who need a father-figure.

If enough men read this book and put into practice its great ideas, society will be a different place, I and thousands of other therapists will then have to find another job.

Outstanding

My congratulations and thanks to Chris Spicer for producing an outstanding book that is without question the best I have ever read on the subject of fatherhood.

I love that he doesn't talk down to his readers, he's not pontificating. but rather encouraging. He doesn't pretend to have been the perfect father himself and openly shares some of his own faux pas so that we can learn from them.

I wish this book was around when I was raising my own children, but having now read it myself, I am grateful to have been able to place a copy in the hands of my son and son-in-law to help them in this most demanding, yet rewarding of vocations.

I'm so sure of the positive impact No Perfect Fathers Here will have, that I have placed a bulk order to make them available to the congregation of the church I pastor.

About the Author
Barry C. Field is Professor of Resource Economics at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. Previously he taught at the University of Miami and The George Washington University. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Cornell University, and his Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley. At the University of Massachusetts he has devoted many years to teaching natural resource economics to students at all levels, and has worked to develop an undergraduate major in environmental and resource economics. Professor Field is the author of numerous articles on resource and environmental economics.

Highly recommended

This book is very well written and covers key notions of environmental economics. One thing I particular like about this book is its lucidity. It reads just like a good novel.

As the title suggests, this is an introductory book. Don't expect to see deep theories or math in this books.

Grinding Technology

Great Book for the beginner and novice. I learned a lot from this one. It explains step by step the procedures from preparing and choosing the right grinding wheel to dressing contours. The author did a good job explaining, in an easy to understand text, what it takes from the basics to the actual grinding procedure. Well worth buying!!

Robin Stowell is Professor and Head of Music at the University of Wales College of Cardiff and a professional violinist who has written extensively on stringed instruments and performance. My style has always been considered "doodling" but where many consider this a mindless artform, to me it's satisfying and aesthetically pleasing, and perfectly suited to colorers.�When I planned an alphabet book, the pencil outlines of each letter was only the start. I spent months researching the objects that would go into each letter - bonus point if you can name the animal in Q!! :)�One of the main reasons I produced this book, was because people wanted to colour initials for gifts - for instance a grandmother told me she wanted to color all her grand children's initials. It seemed to me to be the perfect book for this.�I hope you enjoy this book - if anyone is brave enough to try and spot every single object within all the letters, get in touch.... Amazing detailed letters of the alphabet - therapeutic colouring at its best

I love adult colouring books is perfect if you enjoy colouring in detailed and small spaces. I prefer colouring in complicated pictures that take ages to complete. This is nice because you can start and leave it or in most cases I get glued to it and don't want to stop until I have finished. It allows you to be creative even if you are not naturally artistic, it will bring out your creative side. I like matching the colours to use in these alphabet shapes. The fun thing is you can use loads of different colours and it just keeps looking better and better. With some colouring images you need to stick to 3 or 4 colours or it starts looking messy and complicated whereas with the alphabet drawings you can start by colouring in the leaves or a particular item that is repeated on the letter and then go from there. There are many different techniques and ideas for how to colour in but in my opinion you should just go with the flow and see where you land up. You can never make a mistake.

I prefer using copic markers because the results are very bright intense shades but then there are many different ways to colour in and so much choice, coloured pencils are always great too. A word of caution if you are thinking of using alcohol markers, they will bleed through to the other side of the page so you would need to put a piece of cardboard there to stop it leaking on to the next page.

The pages are not perforated so you would need to carefully tear the page out. In total there are 2 x 26 alphabet letters from A - Z and at the back of the book there are a 4 small symbols that are added to the book. In the middle of the book there are more free pages with exciting symbols. Another bonus to this book is a special code for a free pdf doodle name of your choice.

26 of the pages have a single letter on and 13 of the pages have 2 letters along side one another so you receive a large letter and then a small one of the same letter in the same design.

It is a wonderful therapeutic book and it is suitable for all skill levels and children could enjoy this too. For me the big plus is the amount of detail in each one.

Lots of fun, relaxing coloring!!!

This book is a blast to color! Because the art consists of fun, cartoon-style doodles, I really felt I could go all out with my color choices, not at all hindered by trying to be coordinated with hues or matching tones. Coloring doodles makes you feel free to go all over the spectrum! There is a "hidden item" element as well as you try to find the objects related to the letter.

The paper quality is smooth, if a bit on the thin side, but since the designs are one-sided, that doesn't present a problem for markers as long as you use a piece of paper to prevent bleed-thru. The art is crisply hand drawn as well and objects are a comfortable size, not too tiny. Highly recommended as it made for a very relaxing, meditative coloring experience.

Bittersweet But Very Good

This is an excellent set of stories focusing primarily on the relationships between nuclear family members. The stories are serious in tone and often have ambiguous endings, so if you are looking for a light read, this is not it. However, the author has a real talent for making the ordinary extraordinary, and vice versa.

The first story, "Everything a Parent Needs to Know," describes the fraught relationship between a mother and her petulant ten-year-old daughter. The mother relies heavily on modern parenting literature, and the obviously fictional quotations from books such as "Like Dogs, Like Children" (authored by "Ben Ruff"), while humorous, detract from the subtle realism of the story.

"Wooden Mum," "Dancing in the Kitchen," and I Will Never Disappoint My Children" also are about well-intentioned mothers who have difficulty forming emotional connections with their kids. "Love: Terms and Conditions" is a more optimistic take on parent-child relationships.

Fear is a theme in several stories. The elderly homeowner in "My Burglar" fears for the safety of her valuables. The child protagonist in "Bed Rest" prefers to use her imagination "for prevention rather than cure: a means of injecting myself with enough disappointment and terror to protect against a future epidemic." In "The Rescue," a father fears that his adult son may be beyond rehabilitation. In "The Countdown," another father's deepest fear is that he may kill his baby daughter.

Two stories, "Scaling Never" and "Bodies," concern children coping with the death of a family member. "Scaling Never" is particularly heartbreaking.

"Under Covers" alternates the perspective of an elderly widow with the viewpoints of the two teenage girls who are observing her. Similarly, "On the Way Home" sequentially reveals the thoughts of five strangers, each of whom is subtly connected to one or more of the others.

The protagonist of "Just in Case" is an odd, insouciant young woman who works in a luggage shop and is overly fascinated with its goods. The dollhouse in "Wooden Mum" took on special significance, and so do the bags and cases in this shop. The ending is sinister, and it's unclear how realistic the tale is meant to be.

Three stories leave realism far behind. "Sweet Home," the title story, turns the tale of Hansel and Gretel on its head. "The Ice Baby" is a Pinocchio-like tale, told from Gepetto's perspective. And "The Baby Aisle" is about a world in which family members are merchandise.

The stories in "Sweet Home" are generally interesting and beautifully told. If you enjoy reading sentences like, "Her words percolated up the tunnel of her throat, espresso-thick and strong," and "All the staples were upside down, lying like dead insects with their little legs in the air," then this is the book for you.

A great collection of stories

Sweet Home is a great collection of stories. The stories are all quite dark at times but not too dark if you know what I mean. The collection is tinged with moments of sadness. The stories tackle the themes of loss, motherhood, hope and regret and all contain an echo of pain. I really loved the way Bray uses magical realism and fairytale elements. Every story in this collection works well on its own merit and perfectly as a collection. It’s rare to find a collection of stories without at least one weak story. Some stories tugged at my heart strings including The Rescue. My favourite stories were Sweet Home, The Rescue, The Countdown, Bed Rest and The Ice Baby. I loved the others but these shone a little brighter.
