The story is so bad that it is nearly funny in an unintentional way

The story is so bad that it is nearly funny in an unintentional way.

Ten years before the story begins, Summer was engaged to the man she loved. Then her hard-hearing aunt, queen of gossip, tells her that rumor has it that Brad, her fianc�, has kissed a girl under the mistletoe (as if that was such a big deal!). Our brain-damaged heroine breaks up with the love of her life without giving him the chance to explain himself! She begins a career in modelling and dates another man who seems as stupid as her. They could therefore be a good match but she wants to break up. Without even popping the question, he buys her an engagement ring and Summer passively accepts the situation because, maybe, that is a sign that God has sent her this man! Now, there is nothing wrong with trusting God but that does not mean that you cannot use your brain and your heart to know what you want in your life: grow up, heroine!

Summer is supposed to spend Christmas in California with her new fianc� and his parents, which she dreads. Luckily, the plane that she should take to go the California is cancelled due to a storm and the only flight not cancelled is to Kissing Bridge (!) her hometown in Vermont. Despite the terrible tragedy which happened 10 years ago (remember, a guy kissed a girl under the mistletoe, a real tragedy indeed!) she takes this plane and surprises her mother and her aunt who are happy to see her but nonetheless seem to be in some excruciating crisis. Has one of them discovered that she has cancer or lost her job or what exactly is the problem? The problem - sorry, the tragedy - is that the mother has not won the cookie competition, she is only second! How heart-breaking is that!

Ok, I won't tell the end because you get the gist. The characters are shallow and terribly immature. The story is practically non-existent and idiotic. And the language! Even I, a non-native English speaker (sorry for any mistake in this comment by the way) could spot many mistakes. The worst of all is: "could have went" (aaaargh!). And the author does not seem to know the difference between fianc� (a man) and fianc�e (a woman), or between "envious" (feeling or showing envy) and "enviable" (arousing or likely to arouse envy). There are other examples but there is no point in listing them.

Reading a romance is something you do to relax and take a vacation from your brain, but this story did not relax me at all, it just irritated me because of its low quality. And my brain, which can accept mildly hard-to-believe and not-so-original plots in a romance protested strongly at the sloppiness and sheer stupidity of this one.

I knew Linda to be an excellent writer from her outstanding non-fiction books on frequencies and law of attraction, so I was looking forward to her creative storytelling. "Christmas Kisses…" is just what I had expected and hoped-for: A delightful, light-hearted romp through the classic challenges of finding true love, amidst family quirks and Holiday Season homecomings. Set in the beautiful, picture-postcard Vermont town of Kissing Bridge Mountain at Christmas time, if you like LOVE, hot chocolate and cookies! -- and who doesn't?! -- you'll love this fun escape... Enjoy! :)

I have yet to get through all the tips and excersizes, but I am getting there. So far the directions are SUPER easy to follow and a lot of fun. The author is quirky and blunt and I like that. Defintely worth the purchase!

It's not Photoshop Elements 7

Don't make the mistake I did when I saw Photoshop 7 and thought it was Photoshop Elements 7. Although an excellent book, it is over 7 years old and most techniques can't be followed in Photoshop Elements 7.

Extremely useful for learning cool stuff in a fun way.

There are two kinds of Photoshop books I buy, large expensive reference books (usually one per version I upgrade to) and specific technique books. The reference tombs I refer to when I’m trying to get something done and can’t figure out how to do it. They aren’t fun, but do provide needed guidance. Then there are the books (like this one) that are fun to sit down with and learn as I actually work on images. By the time I had done about a quarter of the techniques in the book I found that my Photoshop skills had really grown in areas that I’ve always found confusing before. And in several cases I found better ways to do stuff that I thought I already knew a lot about.
I usually don’t have much use for the CD’s that come with books, but this one has the before and after example pictures for each of the techniques, and I found it really helpful to open the actual files that the examples use and work through the steps, seeing the changes as the image is transformed. On the other hand, why anyone would want to use the trial version of Photoshop included on the CD, I can’t imagine. But the whole book is on the CD as an e-book, and that makes it possible to do some cool searches.
Overall I’m really impressed with what I was able to get out of this book, and with the enjoyable way it’s all presented. Lots of creative techniques, good background details about what the controls in dialog boxes do, and a painless workout of Photoshop’s more complex and powerful functions. Definitely a cool way to learn about Photoshop 7.

the book focuses on the major philosophers and thinkers during the enlightenment and french revolution period,the method of writing used in the book was a bit hard for me to understand..it was a little too ..grammatical and i had to use my dictionary alot. and also i feel it isn't worth the price

Life on Two Legs

I really enjoyed this book. I have been a 60's and 70's music nut forever so it was a joy to soak up Norman's insights and reflections. What a great little business he got rolling too - a good example of being one step ahead of the game, and working hard. Owning a few albums that were recorded at Trident added to the pleasure of the read. The chapters on when and how things came unstuck are interesting (Queen, overseas investments), and I felt I wanted to know more. The two other music bios I have read, Keith Richards and Bacharach, featured the unusual approach of including comment by certain key players in response to the author's take on things. I sort of wanted to hear, say Brian May's view, or those of the independant investors in Trident, just for balance. But I do warmly recommend this book to music crazies like me!

VERY unique story...

A very unique view of the Trident studio and their ways. Lots of great information never found in other books, and helps to balance the one-sided angry stories Queen have told all their lives (not unfounded, but Norman points out the extreme COSTS to do things for the band... they may not have known.) Great stuff on Bowie, Roy Thomas Baker, Ken Scott, many more big names from the studio's history. Great for fans of 60s 70s music!

A must read for the pop music enthusiast - plus a great personal story of Norman's journey

This was a fantastic insight into the music industry during such an important time. A great walk down memory lane. Norman's story is so unique and well written and certainly gives the consumer a whole new perspective on how things really worked during those years. Being a huge Queen fan, it was very interesting to see how the band evolved and the "behind the scenes" work and money that went into their success. Definitely a great Christmas gift for the music enthusiast !

Business Cycle Approach to ETF Asset Allocation

Asset allocation is one of the most critical aspects of investing. Unfortunately, too many investors do not pay as much attention to asset allocation as they should, typically resulting in inferior investment performance. After reading Pring's book, investors will have a clear-cut methodology on which factors are important to a well-adjusted portfolio, as well as how to use ETFs to build the portfolio.

Based upon the author's extensive knowledge of technical analysis, his numerous educational seminars, his newsletter, and previous books, Pring provides investors with a detailed step-by-step guide to asset allocation. In addition, the book comes with a very useful CD-ROM and workbook reference to provide additional insights and further clarification of his key points.

After reviewing the basics of diversification and wonders of compounding, Pring focuses on the typical business cycle covering the rate of change, chronological sequence of events, and using indicators to determine the sequence. In a later chapter he depicts the six business cycle stages and how to recognize each one using specific indicators. He also covers trend lines, moving averages, overbought/oversold, relative strength (not RSI), divergences, and his unique KST indicators.

Pring explains long-term cycles and ways to determine the direction of the secular trend, and then how the business cycle drives prices of stocks, bonds and commodities. He illustrates how the ten market sectors move in a rotational process through the six stages.

Pring believes that ETFs are a good way to diversify a portfolio and provides and introductory chapter on ETF families and their make-up. He shows how to use ETFs in a sector rotation approach.

In summary, Pring provides investors and traders with a well thought out methodology combining the business cycle changes, sector rotation, and ETF portfolio. This 370-page book and accompanying CD-ROM require many hours of study to get the most from it, but the impact on an investor's portfolio performance can be substantial.

Works in theory, not in reality

The first book I read by this author, Investment Psychology Explained, was probably one of the best investment books I had read. So, when I heard that Martin Pring was coming out with this book, I naturally went to Amazon to order it.

In a nutshell, the 370 pages of this book covers how the business cycle affects different market sectors, and how you can use ETFs to profit from it. This book starts off like more traditional investment books by talking about the benefits of diversification and the power of compounding.

From there, Mr. Pring gets right into the business cycle, and other cycles, such as the Kondratieff Cycle. The author then discusses how you can use government statistics to determine what stage of the business cycle you are in. Some of these statistics include: unemployment insurance claims, money supply, and industrial production.

Once you get deeper into the book, Martin Pring will introduce you to his business cycle barometers. He uses complex proprietary formulas derived from all sorts of government data, to help predict bond, stock, and commodity fluctuations.

Even though I think Mr. Pring's method made sense, and I can understand the rationale behind this, what I didn't like is that the average person could never come up with a barometer like he has. To get this barometer, you would basically have to sign up for his newsletter, and this I did not like one bit. Furthermore, I can say after 7 years of trading myself, that there are much easier ways of making money in the market than combing through vast amounts of economic statistics.

The book finished off with a discussion on ETFs, and the author gives a list of all ETFs available at the time of writing. I thought this section was good, as I have always thought that ETFs made a lot of sense, and had a lot of advantages. Nonetheless, all in all, I would not recommend this book.

One of the Best

This is the best book I have seen on business cycles for investors. It describes business cycles, what causes them, and how they develop through the different stages. It does an excellent job at that.

The book also shows how to recognise the 6 different stages of the business cycle using 3 main approaches: (1) market action, (2) economic indicators, and (3) economic models. I have not seen a better presentation anywhere else.

Finally, the book describes how the 10 main industry sectors of the economy behave in the different stages of the business cycle. Then, it shows how the investor can use ETFs (one chapter is devoted to introducing ETFs) for the sector rotation process. The book also suggests portfolios for each stage of the business cycle.

This is one of the best finance/economics books I have read. I strongly recommend it to every investor.

A conscious simplification of Michael Porter's classic Competitive Strategy, this book treats only one of Porter's five forces, "potential entrants." According to the authors (Value Investing), avoiding competition is the only way to escape "a level playing field in which anyone can join... [and] only the best... survive and prosper." Most of the book discusses ways to gain protected positions from which businesses can be run badly but still earn abnormal returns. Cutting prices, matching prices and using domination of one market to create a monopoly in another are all discussed; legality is mentioned only briefly and indirectly. The best of their recommendations is to find small, declining, local markets without existing competitors. Despite the title, the book seems aimed more at investors than managers. Stockholders appreciate the value of mediocre companies that generate steady, unexciting profits in local markets without much notice; they like them because the stock is cheap. Managers usually aspire to build something better, in order to make the stock expensive. Still, this book is a useful counterpoint to the idea that conflict and growth are good for their own sakes. The 80/20 principle applied to business analysis

Carefully read the first half of this book a couple times and you can expect to deeply internalize the most general, enduring principles of analyzing competitive advantage and entry barriers.

This book's value is its simplicity. There's nothing groundbreaking here. Greenwald's got no axe to grind, no TED-talk tailored concept to (over) sell. The ratio of insight to fluff is very high, so you'll actually remember what you read.

Non-practitioner's won't grasp how valuable a simple, deeply internalized analysis framework is. Researching a company you know nothing about- cracking open a fresh 10-K - can be overwhelming. A simple framework focuses your attention, let's you filter out the noise, and zoom in on the pertinent.

Porter's five forces isn't wrong, it's just excessive and distracting. Sure, it's nice for an MBA assignment: go analyze company X on these five dimensions. But if the lesson learned is that equal effort should be expended analyzing "supplier power" as "entry barriers", then the student has been deceived.

Scholars love excessive complication. I recall the corporate finance section of the CFA exam, wherein project go/no-go decisions depend on said project's stock market Beta, with calculations carried out to the decimal point. All this "rigor" for calculating project discount rates despite the empirical fact that Beta doesn't work. It's not just slightly wrong. It gets the *sign* of the covariance-return relationship wrong. Amazing.

My point is that Greenwald runs counter this tendency. He cuts away the baloney, ignores the auxiliary, and solidifies the foundation of competitive analysis.

*The second half of the book, which deals with strategic interaction, isn't vital. It feels like Greenwald threw it in because his publisher wanted a longer book.

I am always reading, I am 33 years old, and this book has been the most important business book I have ever read in my life. It provides a straightfoward framework to analyse and understand the quality of a business, the existence of barriers to entry and the sustainability of these barriers (when identified that barriers currently exist).
