About the Author
Kent D. Shifferd has taught for 35 years at Northland College, the University of Wisconsin, Ripon College, and United Theological Seminary. He is a founder and former executive director of the 21-school consortium, the Wisconsin Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies.

I teach in the field of Peace and Conflict Studies. Dr. Shifferd's book is outstanding history and, using that war and peace history, a valid proposal to eliminate war. I've used this 2011 book since it was published and am using it in three classes this fall. A student of mine, Heather, has given permission to use just a small excerpt from her initial response to From War to Peace:
A Student At Bluegrass Community College in Kentucky Writes About Chapter One of From War To Peace
I enjoyed this first chapter reading immensely. From the very start I have a fondness for Kent D. Shifferd's sociological look at the human response and conditions in which we are brought to war and perpetuate war. While I have been alive for 35 years, I still think that I have much to learn about the complexities of our interaction with others on the planet and something as simple as Shifferd stating on page 2, "...the great paradox that most people want peace but support the institutions that perpetuate war. " floors me. I think I am a product of my cultural indoctrination that war is acceptable, common, and an eventuality in most situations. I feel hopeful to see that Shifferd will present in this chapter revelation that war is indeed a modern cultural phenomenon and that as Homo sapiens, we have not always responded to one another with violence and such force.
Another stunning revelation is his position on page 6, in which he is referring to the events of World War II, stating, "Almost no one of these people is evil, but they acquiesce to, and in some of them perform, evil deeds." How interesting to dissect the actions, events of war and human tragedy from the actual person and the human soul that is behind the physical event. I think it is easy to immediately respond to violence with a blanket belief that the individuals behind such killings are somehow `ruined souls', `stained', or `damaged beyond repentance'. Again, I am welcoming the idea that my thoughts can begin to dissect the cultural and sociological propulsion to act in violence from what human nature actually intends of each of us. Fight or flight mechanisms aside, I think the human spirit finds no comfort in hurting one another.

A Great Addition

This book was in absolutely perfect condition. I plan to use it for my Intro. to Peace/Conflict Studies class at my college. I highly reccommend it.
