Hirokazu Kanazawa founded the Shotokan Karate-do International Federation of 1979. He is also the author of Black Belt Karate and Karate Fighting Techniques, published by Kodansha International.

The 2013 reprint is of poorer quality

The 2013 reprint is of poorer quality, printed in South Korea whilst the prior was printed in Japan. The photos are darker & more grainy & so its harder to see smaller detail like hand positions.
Excellent book, unfortunately the publishers have not done it justice.

Brilliant!!

Just what you would come to expect from one of the all time greats in Japanese Shotokan karate, a large (hard back) 240 page book packed with hundreds of small black & white detailed photos & explanations of all the 26 kata in the Shotokan canon.
Each move & many of the intermediate moves are explained in full detail under the pictures.
One nice little surprise for ALL Shotokan Karate-ka is a new (for me anyway - it's actually very old) kata called Koryu Gankaku or (Gankaku-Sho).
Each of the katas movements are highlighted with easy to read symbols to help you with speed, breathing & kime etc.
Bunkai (application of kata) is shown at the end of each kata as well as a glossary of karate terms.
Quite simply a great book to complete Kanazawa Sensei's bookshelf of books including: Black Belt Karate, Karate Fighting Techniques: The Complete Kumite, Karate My Life
At least in this book you may find all the Shotokan Kata in one place, whereas before you had to buy two books which are now becoming quite hard to get a hold of: Shotokan Karate International Kata: Volume 1 & Shotokan Karate International Kata: Volume 2

Great resource, but wait for the reprint.

I've used this book at the dojo where my family trains, and was looking to purchase a copy for home. This is a wonderful resource for Shotokan karateka, but the current prices listed by third party sellers here are extortion. The most recent printing appears to be sold out nearly everywhere, so if you absolutely, positively must have this book right now, you may be stuck with these ridiculous prices. However, I contacted the publisher about it because it is still listed on their website as a current product, and was told that a new printing has been authorized and is in the works. So, if you can be patient, you should be able to buy a copy in the near future for the list price.
