About the Author
Dr. Julia Riede is a nuclear physicist in love with her knitting needles. She has been taught how to knit by her grandmother in her early childhood in Austria and never stopped since. After many years of following knitting patterns of others, she finally decided to start creating her own back in 2008 which led to the publication of over 40 knitting patterns, four books and countless blog posts on how to design shawls, create your own knitting patterns and how to improve your knitting skills. Design the shawl YOU want to knit!

Sometimes you have an idea in mind of what you want to knit, but you can't find a shawl pattern that matches that idea. This book is the first volume of a three volume series that will help you design that fantasy shawl, yourself. Shawl designing is all about geometry. If you want to make a triangular shawl, or knit a square shawl from the center out (or from the outer edge in) you need to know how to knit to create specific angles, (such as 30, 45, and 90 degrees). As examples, the author has included several detailed shawl patterns.

Comprehensive shawl anatomy

This book is being published in three parts: Part 1: basic shapes (available now), Part 2: Advanced Shapes, and Part 3: Fancy Shapes.
My review is based on a first quick reading (though I've followed the blog posts which cover most of the same info). Part 1 is filled with information about yarns, gauge, calculation how-to's as a basic design step, and description of many variations of the three following basic shapes: squares, rectangles and triangles. The book includes some very nice patterns too!
In my opinion, I don't think this would be suitable for beginner knitters (and I don't believe it is marketed as such), but I think beginning designers would benefit. I also think the book could benefit from professional layout and design, but what is really important is the information covered. Of course, that would increase the cost.
Overall, this will help an intermediate designer understand the structure of these shawl shapes, and I'm very happy with it. Looking forward to the next parts!
