This portfolio is an exploration in architectural graphic representation. Each of the four projects are designed across a spectrum of conditions; from urban to rural settings and landscapes to buildings. The book is conceived around experimentation and exploration. Each spread investigates representation through an intentionally different lens. With each image, I use a limited palette of software, using each tool for its specific capabilities. For my work, I use Sketchup as the modeler, V-Ray for rendering, AutoCAD for line work, and Photoshop for post processing and page layout. This combination of tools allows a greater flexibility throughout the work and gives the right balance of speed and simplicity. As technology and software develop new interfaces and methods, my technical workflow also evolves.
At the end of this portfolio, an image index breaks down all of the images to reveal the process images used to generate the final illustration. Alex is the creator of the popular architecture illustration blog visualizingarchitecture.com Through his website he engages with an online international architecture community focusing on teaching and experimenting with architecture representation techniques. He is also a partner of Design Distill, an architecture visualization studio located in Cambridge, MA. Excellent book - A journey through what goes into Alex Hogrefe's architectural illustrations.

If this book only contained the illustrations composed by Alex Hogrefe, it would already be an amazing exploration of architecture, art, and design. But it goes much deeper than that.
After each illustration follows a journey through the mind of the designer, setting the scene and diving into the process of making world-class architectural renderings. The workflow is presented in a visually-appealing and intuitive manner, expanding on the process of creating something that is inviting and engaging, as well as structurally possible, practical, and fitting for its environment. The author/designer has an incredible sense of mood, adding lighting and surroundings that make you desperate to be there. I highly recommend it for absolutely anyone with an eye for design.

The book is incredibly useful, clear

I am in the process of working on a new design portfolio, and wanted to generate some killer images for my architecture.This led me to Mr. Hogrefe's most recent publication, Visualizing Architecture Volume 4. The book is filled with superb renderings and graphic information for depicting architectural ideas. And more importantly, he has included breakdowns for each stage of the image as it relates to software. The book is incredibly useful, clear, and will get you excited about showing off your own work. I highly recommend it!
