About the Author
Jo Barnfield teaches garment construction, drafting, and modeling in the undergraduate Fashion Design program at Bath Spa University in England. She is also a pattern maker, constructionist, and technical designer accomplished in beadwork, embroidery, crochet, hand and machine knit.

there are a number of other more comprehensive books I would recommend for those who are more serious about patternmaking or ...

This book is not for the absolute beginner. The reader needs to have at least a basic foundational knowledge of sewing, some patternmaking experience would also be handy. I feel the title of the book is misleading…a primer with all you need to know…I don’t think so! This book is basically an overview of the design process in a nutshell. As a Ph.D. student in apparel design, there are a number of other more comprehensive books I would recommend for those who are more serious about patternmaking or wish to learn about a specific component of the design process (see my recommended list below).
One of the things that bothers me about this book is the grid-based pattern drafting the authors advocate; I feel this approach leaves too much room for potential errors. Also, most of the pattern styles are very basic, classic designs. This book also fails to mention some issues completely, i.e. discusses separate facings but never addresses combined facings. I did find it interesting that the authors use a skirt sloper to draft their culottes pattern rather than the pant sloper as typical of other pattern books. If you are looking to add to your library or simply learn something, this book is good as a quick reference guide and it does have a handful of items that I have not seen in other books, but it is really just a tightly crammed starting point.

• Nakamichi’s Pattern Magic series – NOTE: These for the adventurous designer although you will need to be adaptable and creative as Nakamichi does not always provide precise instructions and measurements for her patterns. She also does not provide full construction techniques; you will need to figure out some of these on your own. Also, these pattern designs are targeted to an Asian consumer market, so measurement adjustments will be necessary to create successful patterns.

I love "Pattern Cutting Primer" for the concise

I expected different information from this book than what is in "Pattern Cutting Primer". I love "Pattern Cutting Primer" for the concise, easy to find information. If I had purchased "Pattern Making Primer" first, I would probably be saying the same thing about it. The two books just repeat too much of the same information.

Great pattern making book.

I had to have this book once I had it from the library. It is a great updated pattern design and making directions. Is age appropriate with out being too old fashioned or retro. I haven't used the book to see if her directions are clear or easy to understand, but at this point I already know how to block patterns and change them to my liking. I use this type of book for a reference on where to begin a change or for ideas on how to get the basic start for my pattern design and pattern building. The content is visual and done very well. Well done. Worth the expense. Jnetti.
